    Overview

Promote the Vote Fund (PTVF) is seeking part-time Lead Hotline Captains to help staff the Michigan Call Center within the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law’s (866) OUR-VOTE nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline (Hotline).

PTVF is a coalition of more than a dozen leading partner organizations who are dedicated to removing barriers to voting and safeguarding Michigan’s elections. From educating and engaging voters, to combating voter suppression, to coordinating Michigan’s legal response to election subversion, our coalition effectively cuts through the partisan noise to protect voting rights for the people of Michigan.

In the lead up to the 2026 general election, PTVF will run a Michigan Call Center within the Hotline. That is, we will recruit and train approximately 100 legal volunteers to answer the Michigan calls to the Hotline and ensure that voting-related issues are immediately escalated to the state’s Boiler Room – a designated legal team trained to troubleshoot election-related issues. Each year, thousands of voters and advocates call this Hotline with questions about voting and to report incidents of voter intimidation and suppression.

We are seeking organized, hardworking, and proactive lawyers, law students, or legal professionals to serve as part-time Lead Captains for the Michigan Call Center. Lead captains are responsible for overseeing and supporting the volunteers who answer Hotline calls.

This part-time contract position is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer, law student, or legal professional who is interested in a fast-paced, high-impact opportunity to help eligible Michiganders make their voices heard in the pivotal 2026 general election.

    Responsibilities

    • Overseeing and supporting legal volunteers responsible for answering the calls to the Hotline by, for example, (1) promptly addressing questions that arise while a volunteer is speaking with callers, (2) providing election law and other legal guidance as necessary to address a question or issue raised by a caller, and (3) providing resources and assistance to help troubleshoot tech issues.
    • Reviewing written call records created by volunteers after each call for completion and accuracy;
    • Escalating issues that raise systemic or complex legal issues that need to be resolved by the state’s Boiler Room.

    Qualifications

    • Be a law student at ABA-accredited law school, legal professional, or lawyer (with an active or inactive license).
    • Have a desktop or laptop computer equipped with a working microphone and speakers.
    • The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and to ask questions, gather information, think creatively, and ensure tasks are resolved promptly.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills and the ability to address multiple issues at once.
    • A passion for voting rights and ensuring that all eligible voters, regardless of who they plan to vote for, can cast a ballot free from intimidation and interference.
    • Knowledge of and/or experience with Michigan election law is preferred.

    Position Details

This is a part-time, fully remote, shift-based position. Shifts are available from Thursday, September 24th through Friday, November 6th. Generally, there are two shifts per day: morning (approximately 7:45 am to 12:30 pm) and afternoon (12:15pm to 5pm). Lead captains must commit to at least two shifts per week.

Lead captains will be paid $25 per hour. Alternatively, the candidate may elect to receive pro bono credit to fulfill law school or employer obligations.

    Application Procedure

To apply for this position, please send your resume and a brief cover letter to mackenzie@promotethevotemi.com with “Lead Hotline Captain” in the subject heading. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by September 15, 2026.
