    Position Overview

FICGN is seeking an experienced Fractional Finance Lead to provide high-level financial oversight, compliance management, and strategic financial clarity for the organization. This role is designed for a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who can operate independently, coordinate with outsourced accounting partners, and ensure financial stability without requiring day-to-day supervision.

The Fractional Finance Lead serves as FICGN's primary internal finance function — focused on financial integrity, budget discipline, compliance oversight, and board-ready reporting. This is a structured, outcome-based engagement capped at 32 hours per month, with a clear scope and defined deliverables. Transactional accounting functions remain with FICGN's outsourced accounting partners.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Oversight & Monthly Close

    • Serve as the primary internal liaison to FICGN's outsourced accounting firm
    • Review monthly financial statements and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness
    • Ensure timely and accurate monthly close in coordination with accounting partners
    • Identify discrepancies, financial risks, or compliance concerns and surface them to the CEO proactively
    • Provide a written monthly financial summary to the Executive Director following each close

    Budgeting & Financial Planning

    • Oversee organizational and program budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and funding commitments
    • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide clear variance analysis
    • Support revenue forecasting, cash flow projections, and scenario planning as needed
    • Prepare financial summaries and dashboards for the Executive Director and FICGN Board of Directors that translate financial data into accessible insights

    Compliance & Risk Management

    • Oversee multi-state employer tax compliance and registrations
    • Maintain a centralized compliance calendar covering tax filings, renewals, and regulatory deadlines
    • Coordinate quarterly payroll tax oversight with FICGN's payroll provider
    • Ensure audit readiness and maintain organized supporting documentation
    • Strengthen internal financial controls and document finance workflows for sustainability and continuity

    Board & Leadership Reporting

    • Prepare financial materials for Board of Directors and Finance Committee meetings
    • Provide clear financial narrative to accompany statements, ensuring accessibility for non-financial stakeholders
    • Advise the Executive Director on financial risk, sustainability, and planning decisions
    • Participate in Board or Finance Committee meetings as requested

    Systems & Process Improvement

    • Identify and recommend improvements to finance workflows that increase efficiency and reduce risk
    • Document finance processes to support organizational continuity
    • Ensure clear separation between oversight functions and transactional bookkeeping

What this role does not include:

To protect the integrity of this fractional structure and ensure sustainability within a 32 hours/month engagement, the following functions are outside the scope of this role:

    • Day-to-day payroll processing
    • Bookkeeping or transactional data entry
    • Accounts payable or accounts receivable management
    • Direct HR management or employee relations
    • Grant writing or fundraising responsibilities
    • IT systems management
    • Serving as a full Controller or Chief Financial Officer

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of nonprofit financial management experience
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
    • Experience managing or coordinating with outsourced accounting firms
    • Experience overseeing multi-state employer compliance and payroll tax coordination
    • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel/Google Sheets
    • Ability to operate independently and efficiently within a defined monthly hour structure
    • Strong communication skills — able to translate financial data into clear, accessible language for non-financial stakeholders
    • CPA preferred but not required

    Compensation and Term

This is a retainer-based independent contractor engagement at $2,300/month, inclusive of standard monthly oversight services. Hours are expected not to exceed 32 hours per month. The Fractional Finance Lead maintains control over schedule and execution method within the defined scope.

The initial term is 6 months, renewable based on performance and organizational need. A Statement of Work (SOW) will be executed in conjunction with this role description as the governing scope document for the engagement.

    Equal Opportunity

FICGN embraces equal employment opportunity without discrimination or harassment based on race, color, creed, age, national origin, alienage or citizenship status, gender (including gender identity and sexual harassment), sexual orientation, disability, arrest or conviction record, pregnancy, credit history, salary history, caregiver status, marital status, partnership status, or status as a victim of domestic violence, stalking and sex offenses, religion, sex, genetic information, military status, unemployment status or any other characteristic as protected by law. With regard to the Americans with Disabilities Act and other related laws, FICGN will be intentional in making reasonable accommodations for persons due to their religious beliefs; disability; pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical condition; or because the individual was a victim of domestic violence, sexual violence or stalking.
