    Organizational Overview

    Street Sense Media (SSM) is an evolving, mid-size, nonprofit media company committed to ending chronic homelessness by providing economic opportunities and powerful forms of self-expression to men and women living in extreme poverty. We work in a collaborative, dynamic and collegial environment for and with the people the organization serves. We work in partnership with other organizations to advance and achieve our mission.

    Position Overview

    Street Sense Media is looking for a hard-working, compassionate and mission-driven individual to serve as full-time Deputy Editor. This position helps oversee the print and digital production and operations of our newsroom for a bi-weekly publication.

    We have a small but strong award-winning newsroom that relies on a fluid team of 5 student intern reporters and volunteer freelancers. The ideal candidate should be able to work with a diverse team that includes other editors, writers, photographers, designers, and non-editorial staff members.

    Responsibilities:

    In conjunction with the Editor in Chief:

    • Edit and assign news stories
    • Generate story ideas and write occasionally
    • Develop and nurture new sources
    • Remain current with research and best practices for addressing homelessness and related issues
    • Coach writers to develop work for the News, Art, and Opinion sections
    • Assist with recruitment, training and supervision of rototating cohorts of editorial and graphic design interns
    • Evaluate submissions and edit poetry and prose for the Art section
    • Manage timely online and print publication deadlines
    • Manage social media promotion of editorial content
    • Design and build pages with Adobe InDesign
    • Manage partnerships with external newsrooms and internal media channels
    • All other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, ethical journalism
    • A commitment to accountability and enterprise reporting
    • Excellent writing and verbal skills
    • Ability to work in a fast moving, team-oriented environment
    • Strong organizational skills
    • College degree - BA/BS required
    • Experience working/volunteering with people who are homeless preferred
    • Experience managing other journalists preferred
