    Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

    Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

    JOB OVERVIEW

    Apex’s Athletic Department addresses the educational, physical, and social-emotional needs of youth from 4th grade -12th grade through team sports, sports clinics during school breaks, family nights, community events and other special opportunities. Our programs are led by the Athletics team, part-time facilitators, and dedicated volunteers who share a commitment to youth development.

    This fall, Apex is seeking a dedicated Basketball Instructor to lead Saturday basketball programming for middle school youth. The instructor will work with students to develop fundamental basketball skills, teamwork, and love for the game, while also supporting youth development beyond the court.

    The instructor will lead skill-building drills, structured gameplay, and team activities that emphasize confidence, discipline, and resilience. The program also aims to foster leadership, sportsmanship, and a sense of belonging for all participants.

    COMMITMENT

    • Saturdays, October 18th, 2025 through May 9th, 2026
    • Sessions 9:30am - 12:00pm or 12:00PM –2:30 PM
    • Opportunities in Manhattan, Chinatown, Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Flushing Queens

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Prepare curriculum, lesson plans, and activities; submit detailed plans in advance for approval and adapt according to students’ needs.
    • Lead engaging basketball sessions focused on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
    • Facilitate drills, scrimmages, and structured gameplay appropriate to student skill levels.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with youth, volunteers, and staff.
    • Prioritize students’ physical and emotional well-being, ensuring a supportive and safe environment.
    • Monitor students’ progress; provide regular feedback and encouragement.
    • Participate in post-session debriefs with staff and volunteers to assess outcomes and identify improvements.
    • Submit weekly timesheets to the program supervisor
    • Staff family nights, community events, or school-break events (optional but opportunities available for additional hours)

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience coaching or instructing basketball with youth.
    • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, drills, and age-appropriate training methods.
    • Experience in education programming or youth development is preferred.
    • Strong communication and group management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
    • HS diploma required; Bachelor’s degree a plus.
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
    • All employees working with children are subject to a background check
    • Chinese Mandarin language skills are a plus

    Pay range: This role offers $30-35 per hour and would require 3-4 hours on Saturday afternoons and 2-3 hours during the week. This position will run from October 18th to May 9th with 18 Saturday sessions held during that time. Additional hours for training and prep will be required and paid. Please see our session dates below (tentative to change).

    • Fall/Winter 2025 Semester: 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, 12/6, 12/13
    • Winter/Spring 2025 Semester: 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/28, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9
