    Position Summary

    The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is seeking a grant-funded, full-time instructor to implement a pilot “train the trainer” initiative to enable union leaders and members to understand AI technology, including automatic decision making and surveillance technology, and enable them to work with employers to have the technologies implemented in a manner that:

    1. Enhances worker capabilities rather than replacing workers;
    2. Improves operational efficiency while preserving professional expertise, service quality and quantity, worker rights, and human oversight; and
    3. Increases human-to-human engagement by workers with each other and, as applicable, with customers, students, and users of public services and benefits.

    The duration of the position under the pilot initiative is two years. Our goal is to develop a longer duration program, thus extending the duration of the positions.

    The anticipated start time is Fall/Winter, 2026.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Collaborate with our higher education partners in developing curriculum focused on artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including training modules, lesson plans, participant materials, assessments, and instructional resources, and collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure that curriculum aligns with workforce needs.
    2. Work with unions throughout the state to implement the training program, including conducting and organizing worker training at union and other facilities.
    3. In the development and implementation of the training, take the lead on ensuring that the training incorporates education about the best practices or proposals, including through collective bargaining or regulation, to provide workers with transparency, due process, and fairness in the use of the technologies, and that the training includes instruction about responsible AI use, data privacy, ethics, decision-making, and human oversight.
    4. Assist our higher education partners and the state Department of Labor in developing credential and education pathways to provide opportunities for worker advancement and worker roles in implementing technology in a manner beneficial to workers and the public.
    5. Evaluate participant learning outcomes and continuously improve instructional content.
    6. Maintain current knowledge of AI technologies, workplace trends, and relevant regulations.
    7. Prepare reports, maintain training records, and support grant or contract reporting requirements as applicable.
