The Coalition for the Homeless serves in a unique role as the designated independent monitor of the homeless shelter system and a party to the many legal cases establishing the rights and protections of homeless New Yorkers. In that capacity, the Coalition receives a tremendous volume of data from the City of New York daily. Additionally, the Coalition collects data through its own day-to-day operations and its twelve programs directly serving our clients.
The Data Analyst plays a central role in organizing, analyzing, and distributing data to appropriate staff and partners. This work supports a range of critical functions including internal analysis, grant reporting, and advocacy efforts that drive policy change on behalf of New Yorkers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare, clean, and organize data for analysis across multiple systems.
- Build and maintain reports that deliver timely, accurate information on the shelter system.
- Fulfill and track data requests from teams across the organization.
- Partner and support teams with their data requests. Anticipate these needs and plan accordingly.
- Document data processes, reports, and workflows to support consistency, quality, and institutional knowledge.
- In partnership with the Data Director and Coalition teams, identify opportunities to improve the Coalition's systems and tools for storing, distributing, and analyzing data.
- Obtain regular supervision from the Data Director to review assigned tasks, troubleshoot concerns and ensure that department and agency needs are met.
- Perform all other duties assigned by Data Director or designee.
REPORTS TO: Data Director
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 1–2 years of professional experience working with data for reporting or analysis (or equivalent) strongly preferred.
- Experience cleaning and preparing data with a coding language such as Python, R, or SQL strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau or similar strongly preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including comfort communicating about data to non-technical audiences
- Ability to work with agency teams in a supportive and collaborative manner
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on deadlines independently
- Curious, motivated, and eager to continue developing technical skills
