    Mobilization for Justice, Inc. (MFJ), a non-profit legal services organization that provides free

    civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, is seeking a staff attorney for its Foreclosure

    Prevention Project (FPP). The position is full-time and is based out of our Manhattan office. The

    attorney will be part of a team that: represents homeowners from all five boroughs facing

    foreclosure in state and federal courts, and cooperative shareholders in non-judicial foreclosures;

    prosecutes cases related to deed theft, federal servicing regulations, and hard money lending;

    works in coalition with advocacy groups on city- and state-wide policy issues; and, conducts

    clinics, trainings, and outreach.

    MFJ’s mission is to achieve justice for all. MFJ prioritizes the needs of people who are low income,

    disenfranchised, or have disabilities as they struggle to overcome the effects of social injustice and

    systemic racism. We provide the highest-quality free, direct civil legal assistance, conduct

    community education and build partnerships, engage in policy advocacy, and bring impact

    litigation. We assist more than 14,000 New Yorkers each year, benefiting over 24,000. MFJ has a

    staff of more than 165 attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and support staff. It is a diverse,

    justice. FPP’s mission is to preserve long-term homeownership through direct legal representation,

    advocacy, and outreach. We strive to empower vulnerable individuals and communities

    disproportionately impacted by foreclosure, ensuring equal access to justice and housing stability.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • All aspects of representing homeowners and cooperative shareholders in homeownership

    related issues: conducting client intake; conducting legal research; drafting legal papers,

    agency complaints, and advocacy letters; and litigating all phases of cases, including

    drafting pleadings, negotiating settlement, engaging in motion practice and oral argument,

    conducting trials, and briefing and arguing appeals.

    • Staffing off-site legal clinics and providing on-the-spot advice.

    • Participating in coalition meetings and being the MFJ point person for certain coalitions.

    • Conducting community outreach, and training lawyers, government agencies, and

    homeowners on the rights of homeowners and their families.

    • Identifying issues for impact or class-action litigation and policy initiatives, and further

    lobbying on issues of importance to homeowners and the foreclosure defense community.

    • Engaging in case management, including maintaining comprehensive notes, client files,

    and case charts.

    Requirements:

    • Admission or pending admission to NYS Bar.

    • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations, or lived experience.

    • Excellent research and writing skills.

    • Strong grasp of numbers.

    • Ability to balance working on complex litigation, handling individual casework, traveling

    to various boroughs, as well as advocating for legislative or policy changes.

    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and leadership roles.

    Preferences:

    • Knowledge of or experience with mortgage products, loan servicers and loss mitigation,

    property tax programs, and cooperative housing programs.

    • Knowledge of or experience with practice in NYS Supreme Court, EDNY, and SDNY.

    • Knowledge of or experience with state and federal rules of civil procedure, and federal

    servicing regulations.

    • Fluency in Spanish, a Chinese dialect, or another non-English language spoken by low-income populations in New York City.

    Employees are granted up to 75 days of parental leave and may use sick and vacation days if they

    have them. Summer Fridays: MFJ offices close early every Friday at 2 p.m. starting Memorial Day

    through Labor Day. Bar Study Time: Eligible employees are granted up to five weeks of study

    time for the bar and may be reimbursed for bar prep expenses up to $3,000.

    MFJ provides employees with health, dental, and vision insurance at no cost to the employee. MFJ

    also provides additional benefits such as commuter benefits, FSA, HRA, and an Employee

    Assistance Program.

    SALARY is pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with excellent fringe benefits. The

    salary range for this position is $81,370.00 to $137,504.65.
