    America’s first trade school, North Bennet Street School (NBSS) is a highly regarded institution offering a welcoming, collaborative environment in Boston’s historic North End.     POSITION SUMMARY

    NBSS seeks an Assistant Director of Community Education (CE) to play a key role in supporting the department’s programs and operations. This position provides essential administrative and logistical support across all CE offerings, with a particular focus on managing the existing Teen Craft & Trade Intensive program. The Assistant Director will also collaborate with the Director of Community Education on designing and launching new initiatives that strengthen our mission and community reach.

    This position reports to the Director of Community Education and works closely with colleagues across the school. Key collaborators include the Community Education Shop Technician, CE instructors, and teaching assistants.

    This is a full-time, exempt position with a Monday–Friday schedule, including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities. The role is hybrid, with four days on-site and one day remote.     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Department Operations & Administration

      • Support the Director of CE in developing program schedules.
      • Manage and maintain program planning documents and facility/classroom calendars.
      • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and scheduling CE instructors and teaching assistants.
      • Oversee the CE registration system (CourseStorm), including class creation, cancellations/refunds, transfers, waitlists, discounts, scholarships, payment plans, rosters, and student/instructor documentation.
      • Provide excellent customer service to students and families via email, phone, and in-person.
      • Coordinate class logistics, including supply lists, equipment management, materials prep, and facility scheduling.
      • Support management of CE program budgets, board reports, and grant reporting.

    Programming

      • Manage execution of the Teen Craft & Trade Intensive program.
      • Assist with developing and implementing program policies.
      • Support program and partnership evaluations.
      • Participate in internal and external meetings as needed.

    School Support

      • Collaborate with Marketing & Engagement to develop CE communications, promotional materials, social media content, and videos.
      • Provide occasional in-person support for off-site classes and promotional events.
      • Participate in School-wide events including Open House and Graduation.

    QUALIFICATIONS

      • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline plus 5 years of experience in community-based education program administration or management or equivalent experience
      • Professional experience with hands-on coursework, including curriculum development and assessment of learning outcomes.
      • Experience working with youth and teens; understanding of childhood development, engagement strategies, and behavior management.
      • Ability to engage with diverse audiences and a commitment to creating welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environments.
      • Demonstrated excellence in customer service.
      • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
      • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
      • Proficiency with digital tools; familiarity with Google Workspace and content management systems is a plus.
      • Strong commitment to the NBSS mission and values.
      • Personal experience with crafts, trades, or the arts.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Must be able to frequently walk up and down stairs.
    • Must be able to lift more than 25 lbs. and assist others to do the same.
    • Walking, standing, and bending for long periods of time.
    • Prolonged periods of working at a computer.

    PAY RANGE:

    $68,000 to $71,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
