POSITION PURPOSE:
The Controller/CFO will play a crucial role in managing the organization's financial health and ensuring its long-term sustainability. This position is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller/CFO will support presentations to the board finance and audit committee and work closely with the senior leadership team.
The Controller/CFO will ensure that our organization has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless and timely audits. This role is essential in partnering with program leaders to educate them on finance and accounting procedures and exploring how the finance function can support program operations.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to Chief Operating Officer
- Approximate number of direct reports: Two (2)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Finance and Accounting Leadership (80%):
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal control and safeguards for processing of revenue, expenses, and all other transactions.
- Coordinate all audit activity for the annual third party audit of financial statements.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization's financial status.
- Lead the annual budgeting and planning process in close coordination with the COO and other senior leaders.
- Administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
- Work with the COO to engage the board’s audit and finance committees around financial health, current issues, opportunities, and trends.
- Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for corporate, and foundation grants.
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the COO and continuously collaborate to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Oversee and optimize the accounts payable and receivable processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
Team Leadership (20%):
- Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA and/or MBA Preferred.
RELATED EXPERIENCE: 10+ years of related experience, including experience in nonprofit accounting and audit, as well as experience in gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
SKILLS:
- Solid experience coordinating external audit activities, managing financial reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and accounting.
- A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of corporate and foundation grants.
- Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installation and managing relationships with software vendors; advance knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Experience with Accounting Seed and Salesforce is a plus.
- Commitment to mentoring, training and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate appropriately.
- Keen analytic, organizational, and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus basic reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentation to senior management, board and other outside partners.
- Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including finance and non finance managers.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
COMPENSATION: This role will be defined as either Controller or CFO at the time of offer, depending upon the skill set and experience of the successful candidate.
- For a Controller-level role, the salary range is $100,000 to $130,000 USD which will be based on location, skills and experience.
- For a CFO-level role, the salary range is $130,000 to $155,000 USD which will be based on location, skills and experience.
