    ABOUT NYISE

The New York Institute for Special Education is one of the oldest and most distinguished institutions of its kind in the United States. Founded in 1832, NYISE has spent nearly two centuries as a beacon of hope and opportunity for blind, low-vision, and special-needs students. Situated on a beautiful, historic 17-acre campus in the Bronx, we provide specialized on-site education for students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

At NYISE, our staff is the heart of our mission. Every member of our team plays a vital role in shaping the lives of the extraordinary students we serve — and we are committed to fostering a workplace that reflects the same care, dedication, and excellence we bring to our students every day.

    THE ROLE

The HR Assistant provides essential administrative leadership, keeping NYISE operating at peak efficiency. By managing the complexities of records integrity, benefits support, and compliance, this role allows the HR department to remain fully responsive to our staff’s needs. You will serve as a vital bridge between institutional policy and the people who make our mission possible — upholding the highest standards of confidentiality and operational excellence. This is a highly administrative role.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Onboarding & Talent Lifecycle

New Hire Orientation: Partner with the HR Generalist (and the HR Director if needed) to arrange onboarding for all new employees and provide comprehensive overviews of benefits, time-off/time-keeping policies, and Institute-wide procedures.

Contract Management: Assist with the annual contract/salary increase process and necessary paperwork, ensuring all documents are uploaded to ADP for distribution.

Digital Records Management: Maintain the integrity of the ADP Document Cloud by scanning and uploading essential personnel documents and keeping digital folders organized. Continue to work towards a “paperless” Human Resource department.

    Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

School Programs Management: Monitor and track specialized requirements for Readiness/Residential/Schermerhorn programs, including semi-annual physicals, training certifications, fingerprinting updates, and 5-year cycles for reference letters and "A-Series" packets.

Attendance Monitoring: Audit employee attendance records to ensure compliance with time-off policies and identify trends requiring management attention.

Employment Eligibility: Maintain and audit I-9 forms and supporting documentation to ensure continuous federal compliance.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma required; Associate’s degree preferred
    • 3+ years of progressive experience in Human Resources or a high-level administrative role
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and ADP or similar HRIS - at least 2 years of experience
    • Working knowledge of HR best practices, labor laws, and confidentiality standards
    • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage high volumes of documentation accurately
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with absolute discretion
    • Enthusiastic, collaborative, and calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Joining NYISE means becoming part of a close-knit community united by a shared purpose. We offer a workplace where staff are valued, supported, and given the resources they need to thrive — professionally and personally.

    • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
    • Generous paid time off, including holidays, school breaks, personal days, and sick leave
    • Pension and retirement savings options to plan for your future
    • A supportive, mission-driven culture on a beautiful 17-acre campus in the Bronx
    • Professional development opportunities and room to grow within the institution
    • The opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with special needs every day

    Compensación

We have state Medical, Dental, & Vision plans. Flexible benefits, state pension, 403(b) options, excellent time off, paid holidays and school breaks each year. Beautiful campus to work and parking if needed.
