Hashomer Hatzair USA is seeking a part-time Development Manager (20 hours per week) to lead and coordinate the organization's fundraising efforts. Working closely with the Camp Director, the Board of Directors, and the Development Committee, the Development Manager will implement fundraising strategies, manage donor relations, support grant and campaign activities, and coordinate development operations. This role is ideal for a proactive, organized professional who is passionate about building relationships and helping advance the organization's mission through philanthropy.
The Development Manager is a vital leadership position that serves as the key fundraiser for Hashomer Hatzair USA and Camp Shomria. The person who takes on this role will be an integral part of our professional staff, working to implement our fundraising plan. We expect the Development Manager to employ best practices and innovative approaches to increase philanthropic support for our organization. The Development Manager will meet with and cultivate individual and institutional donors, helping to foster new relationships and enhance our existing relationships with major donors.

Located in Liberty, NY, Camp Shomria is a 117-acre facility that serves approximately 165 campers each summer (and growing), with a staff of approximately 40 young leaders and roughly 20 older people. Camp Shomria strives to provide a vibrant, fun, and caring community that enriches and strengthens a humanistic Jewish identity. It prides itself on being a place that offers rich opportunities for connection, self-exploration, Jewish values, scouting, social justice, environmental consciousness and belonging.
Essential Functions
Leadership
- Solicit or manage the solicitation of all current major gift donors and prospects.
- Develop strategies to expand, enhance and cultivate the current donor base, including writing grant applications.
- Work with professional staff and lay leaders to develop and implement the organization’s fundraising plan.
- Partner with the Board to plan and support relevant committee meetings (particularly the Fundraising Committee) and provide direct assistance to appropriate Board and staff members with respect to fundraising activities, marketing, special events, and alumni engagement.
- Serve as an integral part of the leadership of the Hashomer Hatzair USA team, playing an active, visible role.
Development Planning and Relationship Management
- Identify potential donors, and develop strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for donors (individuals, organizations, and foundations)
- Collaborate on the planning, organization, and implementation of fundraising activities and special events – including annual giving and capital campaigns, meetings, stakeholder events, direct mail, cultivation visits, solicitation visits, etc.
- Maintain and build existing foundation and community partner relationships and identify new opportunities for partnership and/or support.
- Assist with the recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers focused on development activities.
- Collaborate with various lay leaders to plan events and engage alumni throughout the year.
Development Operations
- Ensure the maintenance of our donor database and accurate donor records, donor communication, and other related areas.
- Generate pledge reminders and all needed reports for donors, committees, foundations, etc. and provide regular reports on fundraising activities to the Board and professional staff, in cooperation with the Fundraising Committee.
- Write, edit and/or submit grant proposals and reports, as needed.
- Write and distribute Impact Report
- Write and distribute biannual communication updating alumni about events, engagement and plans for the future
- Work in collaboration with the professional staff and the Board to write and prepare materials needed for development-related communications, including newsletters, e-mails, appeals, campaign materials, and website.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of three (3) years of proven experience and skills within community relations, growth, fundraising, and/or development with comfort and success as a frontline solicitor.
- Experience soliciting Major Gifts and identifying and cultivating new major gift prospects.
- Advanced CRM software skills, Little Green Light is a plus.
- Must be able to be present for meetings with donors throughout the year.
- May need to travel to Camp Shomria and visit with donors during the summer.
- Position includes some weekend and evening work and travel.
- Participation in professional development programs, including annual conferences and gatherings, is expected.
- Familiarity with Judaism, the Jewish community, and Israel.
- A passion for Jewish camping and a strong understanding of the unique impact of the camp experience.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward donor relationships.
- Experience supporting fundraising campaigns, donor communications, grant writing, or special events.
- Hebrew language proficiency is a plus.
- Preferred: familiarity with or experience working in Jewish youth movements
Compensation/Salary Package
- $35,000-$40,000 a year for part time work (20 hours/week)
- 10 vacation days per year, for a year that commences on the start date
- Can work remotely or in an office, depending on personal preference, although some meetings will need to be in person
