    Position Overview

    CFJ is seeking a Paralegal – Housing to provide services to tenants facing eviction in Los Angeles County. This position reports to the Supervising Attorney – Housing and works closely with the Director of Pro Bono and Director of Self-Help Services as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team.

    The Paralegal – Housing supports CFJ’s Housing Project, including its eviction legal services clinics at the Stanley Mosk and Norwalk Courthouses. The clinics operate 2.5 days per week and are staffed by remote volunteers who assist self-represented tenants with unlawful detainer matters. The Paralegal also supports other Housing Project casework and client services.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist self-represented tenants with unlawful detainer matters, including court forms and other case-related documents, under attorney supervision.
    • Coordinate with remote pro bono volunteers, including scheduling, case assignment, document collection, and follow-up.
    • Provide paralegal support to Housing attorneys on clinic and non-clinic matters, including client communication, document preparation, discovery, exhibits, filings, and case organization.
    • Provide Spanish-language interpretation for client communications and translate case-related materials as needed.
    • Maintain accurate case records and contribute information needed for grant reporting and program evaluation.
    • Help maintain Housing Project procedures, templates, training materials, and referral resources.
    • Coordinate with court staff, community partners, and legal services providers as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the role.

    Qualifications

    • Qualified candidates must have one of the following:
      1. Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program; or
      2. B.A. or B.S. degree with 1 year experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervision of a licensed California attorney with a letter certifying the experience.
    • Prior housing or eviction experience a plus.
    • Bilingual fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish is required.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and client-service skills.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to use usibness communication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.
    • Ability to travel reliably to both courthouse locations and the administrative office in the Westlake area.

    Compensación

    • This is a regular, full-time, nonexempt position with a 36.25 hour workweek. Compensation is $25-$35 per hour, commensurate with experience.
    • This is primarily an in-person position, requiring regular clinic coverage at the Stanley Mosk and Norwalk Courthouses. The remaining work may be performed at CFJ’s administrative office or remotely, depending on program needs.
