    GRID Special District Campaign Coordinator

    (GRID/Green Resilience Industrial District)

Founded in 1966, UPROSE is an intergenerational, BIWOC-led, internationally recognized community organization. UPROSE works at the intersection of racial justice and climate change through community-based planning and research, policy advocacy, popular education, organizing, artistic expression, and youth leadership development.

The Green Resilience Industrial District (GRID) is UPROSE’s transformational community Just Transition plan that seeks to operationalize a Just Transition in Sunset Park through the “green reindustrialization” of its waterfront. The GRID’s first goal is to “Strengthen the working-class character of Sunset Park through the preservation of maritime and industrial land uses and neighborhood jobs.” The first step to achieve this goal is New York City’s adoption of a GRID Special Purpose Zoning District. The GRID Special District Campaign Coordinator will coordinate all campaign-related activities needed to achieve this objective. In addition, the Coordinator will coordinate all work on GRID-related green reindustrialization initiatives, including climate-related manufacturing and supply chains.

This is a full-time position that provides a benefits package and professional development opportunities. UPROSE is looking for someone who can work in-person full-time Monday-Friday in our Sunset Park, Brooklyn office. Salary commensurate with experience. Candidates must be able to work in a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and occasional travel. To apply: send a resume, cover letter, short writing sample, and three references to specialprojects@uprose.org. No calls or walk-ins please.

    Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate a campaign for the adoption and implementation of the GRID Special Purpose District, a top objective of the GRID, the community’s transformational community Just Transition Plan.
    • Work with the Executive Director to develop a strategy for the development of a GRID Special District proposal and campaign plan for adoption by New York City.
    • Coordinate communications and actions with UPROSE’s strategic partners on the GRID Special District Campaign, including Integrated Urban Equity Solutions, among others.
    • Coordinate communications with NYC Department of City Planning and other agencies of NYC during the zoning process.
    • Coordinate a multi-stakeholder work group on climate-related manufacturing and supply chains (e.g., heat pumps and related supply components)
    • Coordinate and/or perform the development of supply chain-related small business and workforce development strategies
    • Support community education workshops and learning circles around the GRID Special District, green reindustrialization and supply chains, climate justice, Just Transitions, and related topics.
    • Work with staff and partners to develop popular education tools for community engagement and education.
    • Support the Executive Director and other staff to develop other innovative GRID implementation strategies and action plans to achieve them.
    • Collaborate with UPROSE staff and strategic partners assigned to work on aspects of wider GRID implementation and/or worker resource activities of UPROSE’s Just Transition Center
    • Represent the organization at meetings with partners and stakeholders and on coalition calls.
    • Cooperate with the Executive Director and assigned staff to provide timely information needed for grant and compliance reporting for the EPA Community Change grant, and any other related funding sources.
    • Contribute to grant-writing as needed.
    • Other tasks the Executive Director may assign.
    • Report directly to the Executive Director.

    Job requirements:

    • Demonstrated commitment to working for environmental, social, and climate justice.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years’ professional experience relevant to community organizing, community planning, community engagement, and coalition building.
    • Ability to coordinate large stakeholder groups and strategic partnerships
    • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team-setting.
    • Outstanding personal organization, time management, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask.
    • Knowledge of basic computer applications, such as Microsoft, Google, and Adobe applications.
    • Excellent written/oral communications skills and comfortable giving public presentations.
    • Good sense of humor.

    Preferred requirements:

    • Prior experience with NYC zoning and land use, including the ULURP process.
    • Experience working with diverse project partners in public, private, and non-profit sectors
    • Understanding of planning/economic development in New York City
