Position Summary:
The Maidu Summit Consortium (MSC) is seeking a dedicated Executive Director to lead our organization in fulfilling its mission of cultural preservation, revitalization, and community engagement. The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership to oversee and advance programs, daily operations and partnerships. The Executive Directors works closely with the MSC Board of Directors to advance programmatic, fiscal, and organizational goals.
REQUIRED DUTIES
Leadership & Organizational Oversight
- Provide visionary leadership aligned with MSC’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between staff and the MSC Board of Directors, answering directly to the Board.
- Foster a culturally respectful and inclusive organizational environment.
Financial & Administrative Oversight
- Oversee the organization’s financial health and stability.
- Assure adequate control and accounting of all funds.
- Manage organizational budgets, financial planning, and reporting.
- Provide regular financial updates to the BOD.
- Evaluate financial performance by reviewing financial statements and cash flow.
- Collaborate with BOD to manage investments and fundraising initiatives.
- Lead efforts to ensure a stable financial future for the organization, including securing grants, donations, membership, and partnerships to support current and future programs.
- Develop short and long-term fundraising strategies, goals and objectives.
- Oversee HR functions, including staff recruitment, development, and compliance.
- Ensure administrative systems are efficient and effective.
Staff Management
- Supervise and support all management staff, ensuring staff have the resources needed to fulfill their responsibilities. Ensure that a safe, equal opportunity work environment is established and understood by all.
- Recruit, hire, supervise, and release all personnel, both staff and volunteers, adapting staffing structures based on available funding each year.
- Ensure training and orientation of all employees and volunteers to meet job requirements.
- Conduct staff meetings and regular, transparent communications.
- Maintain up-to-date job descriptions.
- Evaluate the performance of staff.
- Maintain human resources practices following California law.
Partnerships & Community Engagement
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with tribal communities, government agencies, funders, and community partners.
- Ensure regular communication with both internal and external contacts, including staff, BOD, agency partners, volunteers, donors, and community leaders
- Promote MSC’s initiatives within the broader community - locally to internationally - and represent the values, goals and objectives of the organization.
- Oversee program development, implementation, and evaluation, ensuring alignment with community needs and organizational goals.
- Support and collaborate with staff involved in program management, ensuring effective operations.
- Assure compliance with agency agreements, collaboratively develop shared annual workplans and projects, and ensure effective communication and partnership procedures.
Land Acquisitions
- Identify and research potential lands for acquisition.
- Ensure due diligence is completed.
- Provide information and reports as needed to assist in developing spec sheets, potential long-term management analysis, financial projections.
- Identify potential short and long-term partners for acquisition and land management of new lands.
Organizational Development & Compliance
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan and annual plans, ensuring that they are updated, shared with the BOD, and monitored for progress.
- Support organizational growth, sustainability, and capacity-building initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and funding requirements.
- Develop and oversee efficient administrative systems.
Board of Directors & Reporting Obligations
- Communicate and collaborate regularly with the Board, ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to governance frameworks.
- Assist the Board Chair with BOD meeting preparations, including setting meeting agendas, preparing timely information packets, acting as Secretary, or directing staff, to record Board and Committee meetings.
- Assist in Board recruitment, orientation, and development.
- Prepare and present monthly progress reports to the MSC Board of Directors, summarizing organizational activities, program updates, funding status, staffing, challenges, and upcoming priorities.
- Develop and deliver one comprehensive annual report highlighting organizational achievements, financial health, community impact, and strategic goals for the upcoming year.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum three years of experience as an Executive Director for a non-profit.
- Minimum of five years of supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Maidu culture and Peoples.
- Proven ability to lead diverse teams, manage budgets, develop strategic partnerships and fundraise.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions, adhering to a business casual dress code appropriate for community and organizational settings.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed to represent and advance MSC’s mission, including attending conferences, meetings, and networking events.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and partnerships on a local, state, and national level to meet goals and expectations.
- Ability to lead and oversee staff with equity, professionalism, and collaboration.
- Experience with management systems, productivity and communication tools, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and digital marketing and social media platforms.
- Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively in tribal communities and/or tribally-led projects. Preference will be given to those with professional non-profit experience who have worked in Indigenous-led organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Non-Profit Management, Indigenous Studies, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
WORK SCHEDULE & EXPECTATIONS
The Executive Director is expected to maintain a regular schedule of office hours to ensure accessibility and organizational oversight. The Executive Director is expected to work onsite at MSC Headquarters (Chester, CA), with some flexibility for remote work. Due to seasonal weather patterns, particularly in winter, access to the office may occasionally be affected, and flexibility may be required. Travel to local, regional, national or international events is required from time to time. The expectation is for the Executive Director to balance remote work with in-office presence to support organizational needs and effective leadership.
EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT
The Executive Director position is governed by an at-will employment agreement, which serves as a formal, written document outlining the terms and conditions of employment. This position is classified as exempt from overtime and timecard tracking, reflecting its management and professional nature. The employment relationship is at-will, meaning that either the Maidu Summit Consortium or the employee may terminate the employment at any time, with or without cause or notice, in accordance with applicable laws. The employment agreement details responsibilities, compensation, benefits, performance expectations, and other relevant terms of employment. A background check must be passed before accepting the position. A valid driver’s license is required. A negative drug test is required.
