    Descripción

Mighty Earth is seeking a part-time Southeast Asia Campaign Consultant to lead our corporate engagement campaign to stop deforestation and peatland development in Indonesia and Malaysia for palm oil, timber, and other commodities

This position includes leading our Rapid Response Forest Monitoring program which utilizes satellite imagery and supply chain analysis to file NDPE grievance with companies involved in the palm oil sector. Your work will also drive accountability for environmental and human rights violations in commercial supply chains.

    Key responsibilities could include:

Lead campaign work to reduce the rate of deforestation and peatland conversion and increase the level of protection for forests and peatlands in Indonesia and Malaysia. This could include:

    • Leading Mighty Earth’s Palm Oil Rapid Response project which monitors more than 3,500 oil palm concessions in Indonesia and Malaysia, covering about 21 million hectares.
    • Conducting routine satellite monitoring using GIS and remote sensing to help identify and analyze recent and ongoing cases of deforestation, peatland development, and other environmental threats associated with commodity expansion.
    • Working with the wider Forest Commodities team at Mighty Earth to develop campaigns targeting rogue corporate actors driving deforestation in the timber, pulp and paper, rubber or mining sectors; campaigns that leverage NDPE policies to be applied across commodities; and campaigns to increase forest and peatland conservation and restoration.
    • Communicating with private sector companies, civil society organizations, and other important stakeholders in Southeast Asia.
    • Participating on behalf of Mighty Earth in initiatives such as High Carbon Stock Approach, Accountability Framework Initiative and others when warranted. Developing and filing complaints with independent certification bodies like the Forest Stewardship Council and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil as needed.
    • Coordinating with Mighty Earth’s communication team and engaging with journalists, as needed.
    • Training other members of the Forest Commodity team in geospatial, supply chain analysis and conducting in-depth research on cases and building corporate ownership and control structures.
    • Supporting Mighty Earth’s fundraising efforts, including participation in grant reporting.

Note: Responsibilities could vary based on your expertise and background and including some combination of the listed responsibilities.

Your qualifications and experience should ideally include:

10+ years of campaign and investigative experience working on stopping deforestation, peatland conversion and influencing groups involved in supply chains for palm oil, timber and other commodities. This could include experience in:

    • Creating shapefiles, georeferencing plantation/concession boundaries, and working with external geospatial datasets.
    • Using open GIS software such as QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Google Earth Pro, Python and R.
    • Obtaining and analyzing landcover in SE Asia, deforestation alerts, supply chain datasets, shareholder documents and corporate group structures.
    • Engaging with agribusiness corporate groups on deforestation, peatland conversion and human rights issues, including experience at engaging at director or owner level in the group. Existing connections/relationships are a plus, particularly with major actors in SE Asia.
    • Leading campaign investigations and authoring NGO campaign publications.
    • Working with lawyers to support or defend public campaign work.
    • Working with high-profile media outlets to investigate or highlight campaign work.
    • Highly developed written and oral communication skills for corporate engagement
    • Working both independently and collaboratively within a diverse, inclusive, and globally minded team.
    • Fluency in English is required.

If you have any combination of these qualifications, and not necessarily all, and are interested in the role, please apply. We would be interested in reviewing your application.
