    The Agency:

    Americans for Immigrant Justice (AI Justice), an award-winning not-for-profit legal services organization founded in 1996 to protect and promote the basic human rights of immigrants, has a multicultural and a multilingual staff. AI Justice has represented clients from around the world and is recognized as a powerful advocate and national leader for immigrants' rights. AI Justice works closely with traditional civil rights groups as well as grassroots organizations and local, state and national government officials to affect positive change in immigration policies.

    AI Justice is seeking a qualified, full-time Supervising Attorney to join our dynamic legal team. The Supervising Attorney position is responsible for the supervision of several attorneys and paralegals. The Supervising Attorney also represents indigent clients before the Immigration Court and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). The position also involves providing community education programs, policy and advocacy work, and supervising law students and volunteers. Under the supervision of the Managing Attorney, the Supervising Attorney supervises attorneys and paralegals and renders legal services to indigent clients according to their needs and consistent with applicable law. Key responsibilities include:

    1. Determine case acceptance by reviewing case files and intake interview notes considering grant and case acceptance priorities;
    2. Manage the caseloads and supervise the work of attorneys and paralegals through regular meetings;
    3. Interview, advise, and represent income-eligible clients before the Immigration Court and the USCIS in immigration matters;
    4. Maintain a reasonable case load according to the highest professional and ethical legal standards;
    5. Make appropriate referrals to assist clients in obtaining legal representation in non-immigration areas, such as public benefits, health, housing, employment and education;
    6. Ensure compliance with grant requirements and county, state and federal contracts; prepare narrative and other reports as required by funding agencies;
    7. Participate in community education programs and Know Your Rights presentations directed to the client community regarding rights and responsibilities in his/her special area of expertise;
    8. Establish contacts and relationships with courts, bar, associations, other legal services programs, legislative bodies, governmental agencies, community organizations, and low income groups;
    9. Participate with other staff in conducting complex litigation and appeals as needed;
    10. Identify laws, policies, and practices which adversely affect and diminish the rights and benefits of immigrants, and work with others to devise creative strategies for addressing these problems;
    11. Supervise, delegate and review the work of law students, interns and volunteers so that their work is helpful to AI Justice and results in a beneficial learning experience for them; and
    12. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Any state bar membership required. Acceptance to the Florida Bar preferred.
    • Three to Five years of experience in immigration law required.
    • Preference for experience working with domestic violence victims and/or other victims of trauma.
    • Strong writing, research and analytical skills; strong communication and group leadership skills
    • Interest in policy advocacy at the national level.
    • Excellent presentation skills for community outreach, education and training.
    • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
    • Ability to handle a high-volume caseload, with multiple deadlines and other tasks simultaneously.
    • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment that values giving and receiving feedback.
    • Experience with immigration and/or child dependency legal clinics in law school would be especially helpful.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Fully bilingual, including reading and writing, in English, Spanish and/or Haitian Creole required. Speakers of Mayan languages strongly encouraged to apply.
    • Must have own transportation.
    • Must be willing to submit to an extensive background check, including FBI, statewide repository, and sex offender registry checks.

    Education: JD degree required.

    Location: Candidate must be based in South Florida. Position eligible for work from home, hybrid, or in-office designation in accordance with AI Justice Job Classification Policy.

    Salary & Benefits:

    • Salary commensurate with experience. Salary ranges from $85,430 - $129,600, depending on experience.
    • AI Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package, including excellent health, vision, dental, and life insurance coverage; 15 paid days of vacation leave; 14 paid holidays; 10 paid health days. After one year of employment, staff are entitled to paid parental leave and up to 3% matching employer contribution to 403(b) retirement plan. Vacation and health leave increases after two- and five-year anniversaries. Paid sabbatical available at five years.
