    About DocSong

Documentary Songwriters (DocSong) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with teaching artists and communities to transform stories into songs that heal, empower, and inspire. Through documentary songwriting — a collaborative method that allows musicians and non-musicians to co-write meaningful songs together — we believe every person's story deserves to be heard.

In 2026, DocSong is entering an exciting period of growth, including a planned leadership transition and the launch of a new fellowship program. We're building a more sustainable organizational structure to support long-term impact, and we're looking for the right person to help lead us through this next chapter.

    The Opportunity

This is a part-time Executive Director role — approximately 20 hours per week — within a two-person leadership model. You'll work closely with a Program Director who manages program logistics and systems, while you focus on strategy, fundraising, external relationships, and organizational health.

This role is a strong fit for someone who:

    • Thrives in small, mission-driven organizations
    • Leads with intention and builds relationships with care
    • Wants meaningful work that fits a flexible, self-directed schedule
    • Believes in the power of music and storytelling as tools for connection and social change

You do not need to be a musician. You do need to care about why this work matters.

    What You'll Do

    Leadership & Strategy

    • Provide overall organizational leadership in partnership with the Board of Directors
    • Guide DocSong through a thoughtful leadership transition
    • Help shape strategic priorities, including the launch of DocSong's fellowship program

    Fundraising & External Relations

    • Lead DocSong's fundraising efforts, with a focus on growing the individual donor base and stewarding key relationships
    • Write and oversee grant proposals and reports
    • Serve as DocSong's primary external ambassador

    Financial & Organizational Management

    • Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and fiscal health
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and best practices
    • Work with financial contractors and consultants as needed

    Marketing & Communications

    • Co-lead communications strategy with the Program Director
    • Shape DocSong's public narrative across website, donor communications, and social media

    Team & Culture

    • Work closely with the Program Director to support the team
    • Cultivate a collaborative, transparent, and caring organizational culture
    • Support hiring and onboarding as the team grows

    What We're Looking For

    Required

    • 3+ years of nonprofit leadership or senior management experience
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising, especially individual donor cultivation
    • Experience managing budgets and nonprofit finances
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Comfort working independently in a small organization
    • Alignment with DocSong's mission and values

    Preferred

    • Experience in arts or community-based organizations
    • Comfort with marketing and communications strategy
    • Experience working closely with a board of directors

    Work Structure

    • Contract: 1-year, with strong possibility of renewal
    • Start Date: May 2026
    • Schedule: Flexible and results-focused
    • Location: Fully remote; occasional in-person gatherings preferred but not required

    Equity & Inclusion

DocSong is committed to equity, inclusion, and justice in everything we do — including how we hire. We strongly encourage applications from people of color, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people from working-class backgrounds, and others historically underrepresented in nonprofit leadership.

If you're excited about this role but don't meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply.

    Compensación

This is a part-time W-2 employee position at 20 hours per week. As a small nonprofit, DocSong does not currently offer health benefits for part-time staff. The position does offer a flexible, fully remote schedule with significant autonomy over your time and a collaborative, mission-driven work environment.
