Facilities Assistant

About the Role

The Church at Ponce & Highland (Druid Hills Baptist Church) is a 112-year-old progressive congregation in Atlanta with an active, multi-use historic building — congregational worship, community programming, and a robust rental/events calendar, seven days a week. We're hiring a Facilities Assistant to be the on-site hands and eyes for day-to-day building operations, working directly under and trained by the Managing Director.

This is a hands-on, independent role for someone who's comfortable with commercial building systems, takes pride in catching small problems before they become big ones, and can hold their own with licensed contractors during service calls.

What You'll Do

Sundays (8 AM–1 PM):

• • Be the on-site presence: coordinate with contracted cleaning, security, and A/V personnel, and serve as a friendly point of contact for the congregation and guests.

Weekday shifts:

• • Handle minor repairs across trades — carpentry, plumbing, electrical, general building systems.
  • Meet contractors on-site for scheduled HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire safety, and elevator visits; relay findings back to the Managing Director.
  • Monitor the building and grounds, flag maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Make small approved purchases when needed and keep records straight.

What We're Looking For

• • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general mechanical systems — enough to talk shop with a licensed tech, not necessarily be one.
  • Comfortable on ladders, in mechanical rooms, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Self-starter — this role runs with minimal direct supervision once trained.
  • Reliable and reachable for occasional emergencies outside scheduled hours.
  • Experience in church, institutional, or nonprofit facilities a plus. Historic-building experience a bonus — this one's worth caring about.
  • Comfortable and genuine working in an LGBTQ-affirming, open-and-affirming church environment. This isn't negotiable — it's core to who we are.

Compensation: $24.00/hour, part-time hourly.

Flexible schedule, scheduled ahead monthly/quarterly.
