The Arab American Association of New York (AAANY) is seeking a compassionate and culturally responsive Part-Time Licensed Mental Health Counselor to provide mental health counseling and supportive services to AAANY clients.
The LMHC will provide direct counseling and support to individuals and families accessing AAANY services, with an emphasis on culturally responsive, trauma-informed care. The counselor will work as part of AAANY’s team to help clients address emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial challenges and connect them with appropriate community resources and higher levels of care when needed.This is an approximately 20-hour-per-week position with the opportunity to help expand AAANY’s mental health services..
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide individual and/or family mental health counseling to AAANY clients.
- Conduct initial screenings and client assessments to identify mental health needs, risk factors, and appropriateness for AAANY’s services.
- Develop individualized treatment or service plans, as appropriate and within the counselor’s scope of practice.
- Provide short-term counseling, supportive counseling, and other appropriate mental health interventions.
- Develop safety plans and follow established protocols when clients present with urgent mental health or safety concerns
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records and case documentation.
- Monitor client progress and adjust services as appropriate.
- Identify clients who may require additional or specialized mental health services.
- Provide appropriate referrals to outside mental health providers, medical providers, and community resources when necessary.
- Collaborate with AAANY social service, immigration, and other program staff to support clients’ overall well-being.
- Participate in case consultations and multidisciplinary discussions as appropriate while maintaining client confidentiality.
- Provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed services.
- Support mental health education, workshops, outreach, or community-based activities as needed.
- Maintain professional and ethical standards in accordance with applicable licensing requirements.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, supervision, and professional development activities.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality in all client interactions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Current and unrestricted New York State license as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) required.
- Candidates must be fully licensed and able to practice within the responsibilities of the position without requiring supervision toward initial licensure
- Experience providing individual and/or family counseling strongly preferred.
- Experience working with immigrant, refugee, Arab American, or other culturally diverse communities strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and culturally responsive counseling practices.
- Strong assessment, communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills, particularly Arabic, are strongly preferred.
