Giving Green Director of Growth (Development, Marketing & Communications)
Full-time remote; U.S. preferred. See “Nuts and bolts” below for details.
Giving Green is hiring! We’re looking for a Director of Growth to lead our growth team—the team that manages our communications, marketing, and development efforts to raise more funds for high-impact climate work.
Who is Giving Green?
We research and publicize highly effective giving opportunities in climate—that is, organizations doing impactful work with a strong need for additional funding—to empower everyone to move money towards high-impact solutions. Launched in 2019, Giving Green has moved over $63.5 million for highly effective climate initiatives, including nearly $40 million disbursed directly through the Giving Green Fund since 2022.
We have landed press mentions in The Washington Post, Vox, The Atlantic, Time, and more. Our flagship “product” is our Top Climate Nonprofits, and we have also published work on corporate climate strategies and climate and ESG investing. We also work with businesses, foundations, and others to advise their climate giving under specific constraints, e.g., our guide for Australian donors who need to give to in-country charities.
Giving Green is in the midst of rapid growth. Our impact has so far been driven primarily by inbound interest—a wonderful problem to have!—but we believe that we can multiply our impact tenfold in the coming years with a proactive growth strategy that introduces our work to new audiences. You will lead the team shaping that strategy and driving that impact.
Who are we looking for?
We're looking for a Director of Growth to oversee fundraising, marketing, and communications under a single strategic vision that will sustain the organization's exponential growth over the past few years. At its core, this is a leadership role with an emphasis on ultra-high-net-worth philanthropy. Your top priority will be to develop and execute strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward major donors, working closely with the executive director to build long-term partnerships across the climate philanthropy ecosystem.
Alongside this, you'll oversee Giving Green's marketing and communications strategy, working with our Senior Growth Officer to ensure our research reaches the right audiences, our messaging is compelling and evidence-based, and all growth efforts work together as a cohesive system.
This is an opportunity to build a modern growth function that combines sophisticated major donor fundraising with strong communications, thoughtful marketing, and data-driven decision-making. You'll be responsible for designing and executing a growth strategy that increases awareness of Giving Green, attracts new donors, deepens relationships with existing supporters, and builds a scalable revenue engine.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys moving between strategy and execution: one day developing a long-term growth strategy, the next refining donor communications, or preparing our executive director for a media interview. Above all, we’re looking for someone who is passionate about growing effective climate giving, comfortable managing a small team, and a team player who is willing to get their hands dirty.
Responsibilities may include:
Growth Strategy & Leadership:
- Own and evolve Giving Green’s overall growth strategy across development, marketing, and communications, in partnership with the Executive Director.
- Set goals and KPIs for the growth function, and report on progress to leadership and the board.
- Manage, mentor, and grow the growth team, including our existing digital marketing support.
- Own the growth budget and allocate resources across development, marketing, and communications priorities.
Development & Fundraising:
- Build and execute a donor development strategy across individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
- Proactively identify, cultivate, and solicit new major donors and institutional funders to diversify and grow Giving Green’s funding base.
- Own relationship management and stewardship for a portfolio of donors, from first outreach through renewal, filling a current gap in 1:1 donor engagement.
- Represent Giving Green in climate and philanthropy spaces (online and in-person events) to build a pipeline of future supporters.
- Oversee the creation of development materials, including pitch decks, annual reports, grant proposals, and impact updates.
- Work with growth and operations teammates to ensure accurate donor records and efficient workflows in our CRM, donor acknowledgements, and fundraising performance tracking.
Marketing & Communications Oversight:
- Oversee GG’s communications efforts across owned, earned, and paid media channels, with a focus on audience growth and donor conversion.
- Direct our existing digital marketing support on newsletter strategy, content planning, website optimization, and campaign performance, without needing to execute this work hands-on day-to-day.
- Ensure Giving Green’s research is translated into accessible, publication-ready content—blog posts, web pages, social content—for a wide range of audiences.
- Identify timely opportunities in climate news and philanthropy for rapid-response content and media outreach.
- Serve as a senior champion and spokesperson for Giving Green’s research, able to translate wonky, technical ideas for donors, press, and partners.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional experience in business development, nonprofit development/fundraising, or a combination of development and marketing/communications roles, ideally in a mission-driven organization.
- Demonstrated track record of cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts or partnerships with major donors, foundations, or corporate partners.
- Experience building and managing a donor pipeline and proactively prospecting for new sources of funding.
- Prior people-management experience, with the ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with experience translating complex or technical topics for donors and a general audience.
- Comfortable setting strategy, managing a budget, and reporting on growth metrics to leadership or a board.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities independently, set timelines, and collaborate cross-functionally on a small team.
- Entrepreneurial spirit with experience building and improving upon systems rather than simply operating existing ones.
- Passion for taking action on climate change and strong values aligned with Giving Green’s values.
Desired qualifications: We are especially interested in candidates who bring some subset of the following experiences. We know that strong candidates may not check all boxes, but we are looking for strength in some areas and a willingness to grow in others.
- An existing network of major donors, foundations, or climate-focused philanthropic prospects.
- Experience securing earned media coverage or supporting PR and media outreach, and nurturing media relationships.
- Experience in climate or environmental issues and knowledge of key stakeholders and changemakers.
- Experience helping to build or scale a development function at a growing nonprofit.
- Experience overseeing (though not necessarily executing) digital marketing across email, website, social, or paid channels.
- Familiarity with CRMs (e.g., Keela, Salesforce, HubSpot, Airtable-based systems).
What is it like to work here?
Our culture:
- We have a nonprofit-startup mentality: we’re a small team with lean operations, where everyone is wearing several hats. We strive to do more with less, whether it’s using LLM tools to quickly iterate on marketing copy or finding free event venues through friends and colleagues.
- We value transparency and nuance. We publish our research and methods—and even our mistakes! We’re open about our uncertainties, biases, and constructive feedback.
- We’re fully remote. Because our team currently spans 11 timezones, you may be expected to take calls outside of your standard working hours, with advance notice. Otherwise, you will have a lot of autonomy in how you structure your workday. We value work-life balance and respect your offline time, whether it’s daily childcare or a summer vacation.
- We stay connected through all-hands meetings, a regular reading group, and a Slack channel full of memes. And we meet in person twice a year for a 3-day retreat.
Nuts and bolts:
- We are a fully remote team. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the country in which they will be based. We prefer a candidate in the U.S., since the majority of our donors and events are in the US.
- This is an exempt position.
- We are seeking someone to fill a “full-time” exempt position at 4 or 5 days a week.
- Compensation is competitive for the non-profit sector, and will be tailored to the location and experience of the applicant. As a benchmark, for a full-time (5-day week), U.S.-based hire, we are targeting $135,000 - $185,000. If you have a salary requirement, please indicate this in your application.
- Benefits are competitive for the non-profit sector: for U.S. candidates, this includes fully covered health, dental, and vision; a 4% unconditional 401(k) contribution; 20+ days of PTO plus public holidays; productivity and professional development stipends; and more.
- Our team members can choose to work 4 or 5-day work weeks, with salary and some benefits adjusted accordingly. (Many of us are on a 4-day week: this is 0.8 FTE, not a “4/10” setup of four 10-hour workdays.)
We want to make a major difference in the movement to stop climate change, and you could play a crucial role in leading that charge.
To apply, please complete the application on Airtable.
Any questions should be directed to hello@givinggreen.earth. Our application process consists of a 15-minute screen, one 1-hour interview, a 2-hour work task, and a 1.5-hour final interview.
