Program Overview:
The Education Program at Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia (RMH Philly) provides academic support to child patients and their siblings, helping them remain connected to their learning throughout their stay at the House. The program includes an established curriculum to draw from, along with the flexibility to develop individualized lesson plans that meet each student’s unique needs. It is supported by existing curriculum, materials, and operational infrastructure that ensure consistent, high-quality program delivery, including:
- Individual education sessions
- Group educational programs
- Educational grab-and-go kits
Job Summary:
The Education Program Coordinator/Lead Teacher oversees all programming, administration, and coordination of services provided within the Education Program. This position is responsible for implementing and when necessary, developing, individual and group curriculum for students in grades
PreK-12, as well as planning, scheduling, and delivering educational programming for families. The role is also responsible for training, scheduling, and supporting all department staff and volunteers. This position works directly with families, patients, volunteers and staff. Key to success in this role is:
- Understanding the unique educational needs of children and families impacted by medical illness
- Balancing educational, operational, and administrative responsibilities
- Possessing an ever-present demeanor of sensitivity to family and organizational needs, professionalism, discretion, and compassion
This position requires a flexible work schedule that includes day and occasional evening and weekend hours for special events. The work schedule will be dependent on the every-changing needs of students and their families and their availability. Shifts will be scheduled at times mutually agreed upon by program staff based on availability and the needs of the program. This is a 10-month position, from mid-August to
mid-June. Salary will be distributed across a 12 month period.
Applicants must be willing to submit to an RMH Philadelphia administered Criminal Background Check and provide proof of a successfully completed PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Criminal Background Check (if not at least a 10-year resident of Pennsylvania) and a valid state issued Department of Education Instructional Teaching Certificate.
Essential Duties:
Coordination of Education Department
- Oversee the continued development and implementation of all educational programming to match the unique needs of guest children and families, including individual and small group educational sessions to K-12 school-aged children, as well as educational activities and enrichment programs open to all families
- Conduct one-on-one and small group sessions with students K-12, while working with children experiencing medical challenges and/or special needs
- Serve as the primary liaison with families’ school contacts to create and implementation education plans for children enrolled in the program that are consistent with the home classroom’s progress and materials yet adapted for the child’s current ability
- Create and teach educational curriculum and original programming across multiple grades, content, and skill areas for individual and/or group settings as appropriate
- Oversee the department’s recruitment of students and families for all programming offered by the department
- Lead the onboarding, scheduling, and educational plans for families to ensure their essential educational needs are met
- Develop and manage policies and procedures for the Education program in accordance with RMH Philly
- Ensure that families are informed and comfortable with all Education Program’s policies, programming, and staff
- Serve as primary contact with educational program staff within hospital partners to ensure collaborative care of students and families
- Use and update online platforms and digital tools as part of instructional delivery and tracking
- Track student progress using data and observations to inform instruction
- Manage electronic data tracking systems to monitor departmental outcomes
- Maintain the highest level of adherence in HIPAA/confidentiality, informed consent, and
boundaries forself and team members
- Collaborate with RMH Philly Social Work team, and other Family Support Services departments,
to navigate family referrals and support
- Coordinate ordering, delivery, inventory, and budget needs of department
- Research and connect with potential additional education programming
- Provide a supportive and culturally competent environment to the diverse families, children, staff, and volunteers of RMH Philly
- Represent the RMH Philly Educational Program with community partners and guest families’ educational contacts
- Collaborate with various departments within RMH Philly to ensure continued engagement and support of the program, including Marketing, Development, and House Operations
- Assist families with becoming informed and engaged in RMH Philly programs and resources
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and other physical spaces utilized
Coordination of Staff and Interns:
- Facilitate weekly Education Program department meetings
- Manage staffing and scheduling to best serve the needs of guest families
- Provide orientation, training, and ongoing supervision of Education program staff
(staff, volunteers, and student interns) to ensure they maintain a positive and
compassionate, family-focused philosophy and work ethic relative to RMH Philly’s mission
- Interview, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Education Co-Ops and staff members
Qualifications:
- Five (5) years’ experience, preferably teaching across multiple grades, content, and skill areas
- Experience providing educational instruction in both individual and group settings, as well
as implementing educational enrichment programming
- Experience in educational program design
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience working with children, preferably in a wide variety of ages and ability level
- Experience incorporating digital educational platforms into sessions
- Experience in educational program design and instruction and academic accommodations
- Valid Department of Education Instructional Teaching Certificate
