Who We Are:
The Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity a nonprofit organization formed in 2019 to educate, empower, and organize immigrant communities in Mississippi. Through popular education and grassroots community organizing IAJE provides much-needed information to immigrant communities in MS. For more information, visit www.iaje.us.
Job Title and Description:
The main objective of the Youth Organizer: Civic Engagement is to engage and organize youth leaders to shape and improve their communities through participation in political and non-political processes, voting, volunteering, policy analysis, and advocacy. This position is responsible for furthering the political, social, cultural, and economic goals of IAJE through its engagement and support of young people. The Y.O.C.E. will be trained to implement and develop activities for young people and/or engage in advocacy work to promote and ensure young people's democratic and civil rights; encouraging their social and political participation at all levels in community life. Y.O.C.E. will be charged with building relationships with BIPOC and immigrant youth to build a base of young people.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Recruit youth to participate in regular PYOM-led convenings and events with the goal of building a base of youth.
- Help conduct civic, educational, & social activities and workshops for popular education around issues impacting immigrant and marginalized youth.
- Participate in or lead community organizing efforts.
- Engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of youth.
- Build strong relationships with individual youth and develop youth leadership in programs and organizing campaigns.
- Support in building and maintaining relationships with community-based organizations.
- Facilitate IAJE youth participation and leadership in work with partner organizations and coalitions.
- Conducting outreach, leading class presentations, call or text banking, and utilizing social media to engage base.
- Other duties as assigned.
Organization-wide responsibilities:
- Adhere to professional standards and principles of IAJE.
- Participate in all grassroots fundraising campaigns.
- Participate in cross-department committees and teams.
- Rotating meeting facilitation and note taking.
- Provide support and participation for organization-wide and regional campaigns and events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Strong commitment to social justice, racial justice, and immigrant empowerment.
- Sensitive and compassionate to the needs of immigrant and Indigenous communities and their experiences.
- Shares IAJE’s ideals, strategies, and beliefs in achieving racial justice, liberation, and building self-sustainable communities by immigrant and indigenous Mississippians.
- Strong desire in achieving racial justice, liberation of and for immigrant and indigenous communities, and abolishing ICE.
- Strong interpersonal and team‐building skills.
- Comfortable and respectful in working alongside and following the leadership of immigrant and Indigenous communities.
- Champion the rights of the working class of all immigrants and indigenous people.
- Ability to energize, inspire, and move people to action.
- Strong, engaging facilitation skills with community leaders that inspires and is interactive.
- Excellent ability to track, record and maintain data.
- Computer proficiency.
- Excellent attention to detail and follow‐through.
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Google Suite.
- Valid driver’s license, insurance, and regular access to a reliable vehicle.
- Available to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend events.
Work Environment
The position will be located in IAJE’s Jackson office with engagement and outreach at various locations as assigned; including schools, college and university campuses, community events, public gatherings, and spaces of spiritual or religious practice.
Compensation:
$44,000 - 48,000
