The Housing Rights Center (HRC) is seeking a Paralegal Case Manager for our Eviction Prevention Team (EPT), to serve Los Angeles County residents. HRC serves LA City and County along with Ventura County. Our mission is to actively support and promote fair housing through education and advocacy, to the end that all persons have the opportunity to secure the housing they desire and can afford, without discrimination.
EPT provides full-scope (pre-eviction) services to tenants, to resolve landlord-tenant disputes before an unlawful detainer is filed by attempting to secure rental assistance funding. The Paralegal Case Manager will provide tenants help in applying for rental assistance through City and County rental assistance programs, which includes collecting and reviewing documents, communicating and convincing their landlords to participate in the program, drafting the program agreement and preparing a final application under attorney supervision. In addition, the Paralegal Case Manager will provide limited legal services under attorney supervision at our legal clinics. The Paralegal Case Manager may also provide support in litigation-related work as needed for unlawful detainer actions. The Paralegal Case Manager will work a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of two and up to three days in the office. They may also be expected on occasion to work and travel to other Los Angeles locations. This is a full-time temporary position that may transition to permanent full-time*.
Summary of Qualifications:
- Fluency in English and Spanish;
- A demonstrated sincere interest in helping others;
- Experience in interviewing and assisting low-income communities;
- Strong people and customer service skills and experience;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (legal writing skills preferred);
- Excellent reliable and detail-oriented time management and organizational skills;
- Good problem-solving skills and proactive communication;
- Ability to adjust to new information or changes in processes;
- Computer literate, especially with the Microsoft suite;
- Ability to be flexible in job duties;
- Knowledge of landlord/tenant laws preferred but not necessary
- Previous experience as a paralegal or relevant equivalent experience preferred, but not required;
Responsibilities:
- Interview clients and provide information on various legal issues;
- Communicate with landlords to determine willingness to participate in the rental assistance program;
- Possible negotiations and mediation with landlords and tenants;
- Counsel tenants regarding their legal rights and responsibilities under the supervision of an attorney;
- Participate in clinics and other community outreach projects;
- Track time worked per client and maintain updated client data across several reporting tools;
- Work effectively and in conjunction with the Directing Attorney and the Eviction Prevention staff;
- Draft court pleadings and other landlord-tenant documents, as needed, under the supervision of an attorney;
- Work location can be at either HRC’s Los Angeles or Pasadena offices;
- Provide back-up support with walk-ins during in-office days, as needed;
- Stay informed of current fair housing and landlord-tenant laws.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- NOTE – This position is currently funded using designated funds: there is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond June 31, 2027.
Benefits:
Salary range starting at $58,000 to $63,000, depending on experience. HRC offers an excellent benefits package including health, vision, and dental insurance.
