Youth SOL Community Organizer

Brockton Interfaith Community (BIC), founded in 1990, is a multifaith, multiethnic, multigenerational nonprofit organization serving greater Brockton. Through prophetic, faith-rooted community organizing, BIC builds local power and advances racial and economic justice. BIC works at the state level through the Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN) and nationally through Faith in Action.

The Youth School of Liberation (Youth SOL), founded in 2021, is BIC’s youth organizing program. Youth SOL equips young people to recognize and exercise their collective power, develop as leaders, and shape the policies and systems that affect their lives. The program centers youth voice, community ownership, liberation, and the dismantling of oppression in all its forms.

Position Purpose

BIC seeks a relational, strategic, and highly organized Youth SOL Organizer to develop young people of all ages as leaders and agents of change in greater Brockton. The organizer will strengthen existing youth teams, build new teams, cultivate relationships with parents and community partners, and support youth-led campaigns that advance racial and economic justice. The ideal candidate combines a strong commitment to youth liberation with the discipline, follow-through, and reflective practice required for effective long-term organizing.

Core Responsibilities

Youth Leadership Development and Organizing

• Build and support three to four strong youth organizing teams, including strengthening existing teams and developing one to two new teams, with approximately 8–15 leaders on each team.
• Build intentional relationships with youth leaders, parents, guardians, and community partners through regular one-to-one meetings, with a typical goal of 8–10 one-to-ones per week.
• Develop youth leaders to facilitate meetings, conduct research, tell their stories, recruit peers, make strategic decisions, and lead public action.
• Create and maintain leadership development plans for individual leaders and organizing teams.
• Guide each organizing team through at least one complete organizing action cycle each year, from listening and issue identification through research, strategy, action, reflection, and celebration.
• Plan and supervise youth field trips, relationship-building activities, public actions, and other program events.
• Engage parents and guardians as partners in supporting youth participation, safety, and leadership development.

Training, Meetings, and Movement Participation

• Lead training modules in BIC’s School of Prophetic Action and Youth School of Liberation programs.
• Prepare agendas, training materials, research, and facilitation plans for team meetings and one-to-one conversations.
• Participate actively in staff meetings, supervision, professional development, strategic planning, and organizational reflection, facilitating when appropriate.
• Participate in relevant trainings, meetings, and events of MCAN and Faith in Action.
• Build a working knowledge of Brockton’s schools, neighborhoods, institutions, political environment, and religious and civic leadership.

Campaigns, Communications, and Fundraising

• Support organization-wide campaigns, public actions, fundraisers, and events, including youth turnout and leadership preparation.
• Collaborate with senior staff on grant proposals, reports, and funder communications related to Youth SOL.
• Invite leaders and community members to support BIC as donors or monthly sustainers, in alignment with organizational fundraising strategy.
• Provide timely content for newsletters and digital communications, including stories, photographs, and updates from youth leaders and teams.

Administration, Evaluation, and Sustainable Work Practices

• Maintain accurate outreach, event, attendance, relationship, and leadership-development data in BIC’s internal systems.
• Prepare weekly staff reports and quarterly work plans that identify priorities, progress, challenges, learning, and support needs.
• Respond to work-related email, phone, and text communication in a timely and professional manner, with clear boundaries around nonworking time except when urgent or previously arranged.
• Frequent evenings and some weekends are required, and will be planned intentionally with the Lead Organizer so that peak organizing periods are balanced by appropriate schedule adjustments, recovery time, and sustainable workload management.
• Build FRIENDly practices into youth programming where appropriate, recognizing that these practices strengthen belonging, creativity, courage, and long-term participation.
• Participate in regular coaching and supervision and remain open to feedback, learning, experimentation, and professional growth.
• Perform other responsibilities that are reasonable, mission-aligned, and agreed upon with the Lead Organizer or Executive Director.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice, youth liberation, and faith-rooted or values-based community organizing.
• At least one to two years of experience in community organizing, youth development, education, or a closely related field.
• Experience working with school-aged youth and supporting young people from diverse racial, cultural, religious, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability and willingness to engage thoughtfully in conversations about race, class, gender, faith and spirituality, power, oppression, and liberation.
• Strong relational skills, including the ability to listen well, build trust, coach leaders, collaborate across differences, and receive coaching.
• Self-motivation, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to take ownership of projects while communicating clearly with colleagues.
• Ability to adapt to changing community needs and priorities while maintaining organization, follow-through, and healthy professional boundaries.
• Working knowledge of Google Workspace or comparable digital tools.
• Availability for frequent evening and occasional weekend work, with scheduling coordinated in advance whenever possible.
• Reliable transportation for local travel to meetings, schools, congregations, trainings, and events.

Preferred Qualifications

• Multilingual ability, especially in Kreyòl Ayisyen, Kriolu Caboverdiano, and/or Español.
• Experience organizing in Brockton or another multiracial, multilingual urban community.
• Experience facilitating youth-led campaigns, leadership trainings, or public actions.
