    Position Title: Interim Executive Director

    Supervised By: Board of Directors

    Supervises: Finance Director, Director of Human Resources, PFS Program Manager, Director of HMIS, and Community Programs Manager

    Position Type: Temporary position; At least 3 days a week, for up to 6 months

    Compensation: Commensurate with experience; contract position

    Location: Providence, RI

    Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

    The Interim Executive Director (ED) will oversee and administer the organization while a new permanent ED is selected. We expect the need for an Interim ED for 4 - 6 months, while a robust search takes place to select the permanent ED. The Interim ED, in coordination with the Board, will be responsible for the overall leadership, direction, and management of the organization. The Interim ED should have experience in financial management, community relations, program delivery, organizational development, and strategic planning.

    Vision and Leadership

    • Serves as the ultimate internal decision-maker on operational decisions, consulting with the Senior Leadership Team and Board to execute with thoughtful consideration of the institutional memory and knowledge.
    • Elevates external issues or decisions with larger policy implications to the Board and carries out their directives.
    • Serves as a manager, coach, guide, and partner in problem-solving for work being led by the staff, especially the Senior Leadership Team.
    • External facing representative for the Coalition; collaborates with Board to determine whom to involve for strategic external communications, partnerships, and funding.
    • Works with the Board to host and maintain board meetings and committees, providing leadership, agenda setting, and strategic direction.
    • Works with the Board, Human Resources, and other staff and vendor(s) to support the posting and recruitment for the new ED position.
    • Monitors the external environment for significant changes that will impact the Coalition and its work, and will inform the President and the Board of the current condition of the Coalition, alerting them to opportunities, challenges, and/or problems.
    • Works with the program and communications staff to manage and fulfill the media and communication needs of the Coalition.

    Resource Development and Fundraising

    • Works with the development and communications staff to manage the resource development plan and fundraising efforts.
    • Supports the management of fundraising events and initiatives including State of Homelessness, Courage Awards, Giving Tuesday, 401Gives, and Holiday Appeal.
    • Supports grant writing staff to identify and expand grant and foundation opportunities.

    Personnel and Operations Management

    • Oversees an organization with a staff of 20+ employees.
    • Works with the Human Resources Director to determine staffing requirements and oversee hiring, supervision, evaluation, termination, and setting of compensation and benefits.
    • Supports staff and management in leadership changes, organizational development, and other matters to ensure the success of programming.

    Finance and Administration

    • Oversees a budget of approximately $4+ million; responsible for the overall financial health of the organization.
    • Work with the Finance Manager to establish and maintain sound financial and organizational management policies, including oversight of strategic programs and activities.
    • Monitors the impact of the Coalition’s leadership transition, working to ensure sustainable and successful finances during the interim ED’s tenure.
    • Review financial reports prepared by the finance team and meet regularly with the Finance Committee to discuss reports and other matters related to the financial status and prospects of the organization.

    Program Management

    • Supervises and works with the various program department heads and managers to oversee the Coalition’s various programs and initiatives.
    • Oversee the management of a portfolio of 50+ grants totaling over 3 million dollars, ensuring that grants are spent in compliance with funders' expectations, reports are completed, outcomes are achieved, and work is successful.
    • Works with the program and communications staff to manage and fulfill the media and communication needs of the Coalition.

    Community Collaboration and Movement Building

    • Represents RICEH’s mission and advocacy goals at the state and federal level, articulating key messaging, building bridges to diverse constituencies, and reflecting the shared goals of partners.
    • Oversees the staff and contractor(s) in policy and advocacy work; provides leadership over a meaningful advocacy agenda that reflects and addresses emerging issues that have a significant impact on the sector, both regionally and nationally.
    • Works closely with Coalition partners, key statewide advocacy partners, constituents, government officials and agencies, the media, and elected and community leaders.
    • Works with the program and communications staff to manage and fulfill the media and communication needs of the Coalition.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Seasoned nonprofit manager in the housing field with senior-level experience managing across an organization (programs, strategy, human resources, finances, and systems/infrastructure).
    • Strong strategic financial management experience, including skills in oversight, budgeting, and reporting.
    • Strategic thinker who is good at making decisions with an understanding of how they impact the bigger picture.
    • Team builder, who is skilled at coaching staff for high performance.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive professional relationships, with experience working successfully with diverse populations.
    • Ability to maintain relationships with external stakeholders and funders.
    • Experience working with boards of directors.
    • Exceptional organizational skills, multi-tasking abilities, and attention to detail.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Lived experience of homelessness or housing instability.
    • Bilingual speaker (Spanish)
