    • Draft a monthly newsletter (approximately 1,500–2,500 words).
    • Write concise summaries of key stories, regulatory updates, and investigative findings.
    • Maintain BAN’s authoritative, factual, and evidence-based tone.
    • Coordinate with BAN staff to incorporate internal insights, data, and strategic messaging.
    • Deliver content on a consistent monthly schedule.
    • Suggest data visualizations, charts, or links where appropriate.
    • Input final newsletter into Constant Contact and send to mailing lists.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated experience in environmental journalism, policy analysis, or investigative research.
    • Strong understanding of environmental governance, waste management, plastics policy, or international trade.
    • Exceptional research and synthesis skills.
    • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills
    • Proficiency in Constant Contact

    • Meticulous attention to accuracy and sourcing.
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
    • Experience working remotely and collaborating with distributed teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with the Basel Convention and international waste trade policy.
    • Background in environmental law, public policy, or sustainability reporting.
    • Prior newsletter or long-form analytical writing experience.

    Time Commitment & Compensation

    • Estimated 24–30 hours per month.

    Instrucciones:

We’re asking serious candidates to complete a short pitch exercise to help us better understand your approach to story development and writing style.

To apply please submit your resume, pitch exercise, and cover letter in one pdf through idealist. Please do not reach out outside of this posting.

    Exercise:

Please review the three most recent issues of the BAN Plastic Waste Transparency Project newsletter. (https://www.ban.org/plastic-waste-transparency-project-hub/news)

    Then:

Pitch one story idea you would want to pursue in the next 30–60 days, including a brief explanation of why you think it’s timely and relevant.

Write a ~150-word news brief on a recent plastic waste trade development of your choosing, in the style of the newsletter.

This exercise is intended to be fairly lightweight and should not take more than a couple of hours to complete. If you are not interested, no problem, please just respond to let us know.
