    Description

    BAN is seeking a skilled contract writer and researcher to produce our monthly Plastic Waste Trade Watch newsletter.

    This role requires someone who can independently monitor developments in global plastic waste trade, synthesize complex policy and trade data, and produce clear, compelling, and accurate summaries for an audience of regulators, policymakers, industry leaders, NGOs, and investigative journalists.

    The ideal candidate combines strong investigative research skills with policy literacy and journalistic clarity.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Monitor global developments in plastic waste trade, Basel Convention implementation, trade data, and enforcement actions.
    • Conduct background research using trade databases, NGO reports, government publications, and credible media sources.
    • Draft a monthly newsletter (approximately 1,500–2,500 words).
    • Write concise summaries of key stories, regulatory updates, and investigative findings.
    • Maintain BAN’s authoritative, factual, and evidence-based tone.
    • Coordinate with BAN staff to incorporate internal insights, data, and strategic messaging.
    • Deliver content on a consistent monthly schedule.
    • Suggest data visualizations, charts, or links where appropriate.
    • Input final newsletter into Constant Contact and send to mailing lists.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated experience in environmental journalism, policy analysis, or investigative research.
    • Strong understanding of environmental governance, waste management, plastics policy, or international trade.
    • Exceptional research and synthesis skills.
    • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills
    • Proficiency in Constant Contact
    • Ability to translate technical material into accessible, professional writing.
    • Meticulous attention to accuracy and sourcing.
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
    • Experience working remotely and collaborating with distributed teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with the Basel Convention and international waste trade policy.
    • Background in environmental law, public policy, or sustainability reporting.
    • Prior newsletter or long-form analytical writing experience.

    Time Commitment & Compensation

    • Estimated 24–30 hours per month.
    • Monthly retainer; compensation commensurate with experience.
    • Long-term engagement preferred.

    Write a ~150-word news brief on a recent plastic waste trade development of your choosing, in the style of the newsletter.

    This exercise is intended to be fairly lightweight and should not take more than a couple of hours to complete. If you are not interested, no problem, please just respond to let us know.
