    Role description

The 19th is hiring an audience analytics manager to design and implement a data strategy that seeks to understand the needs and habits of the women and LGBTQ+ people we aim to serve in order to help direct audience growth and engagement work across the organization. As a member of the audience team in a bridge role, a person who sits at an intersection of many functions and plays a major part in bringing them together, this position will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, translating and sharing audience data into actionable insights, ensuring journalists, producers, editors, designers, product and program managers and senior leadership have the data-driven insights needed to support an audience-first organization. The person in this role must have a deep understanding of audience behavior, strong empathy for newsroom workflows and expertise in translating audience data into clear, compelling narratives for stakeholders who have varying levels of familiarity with using data to make strategic decisions about our work.

As an example of a typical week, the audience analytics manager will join a project planning meeting to serve as the voice of our audiences’ needs, host a newsroom-wide training on how to use data to inform coverage decisions, collaborate with program leads to improve tracking of external partnerships and complete a request to evaluate a product experiment. They will work with content, platform, product, marketing and program data to collaborate with stakeholders across teams. And they will work closely with the product and technology team on data governance and infrastructure. This role will primarily use tools like Google Analytics 4, Parsely, Mailchimp, Metabase and Airtable.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement systems and reports to monitor monthly goals progress and performance for key metrics, including total journalism reach, subscribers and product, platform and program health metrics in alignment with The 19th’s mission and strategic plans
    • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data from Google Analytics 4, Parsely, Sprout Social, Mailchimp, audience surveys and more to identify audience behavior patterns, content performance and engagement trends across platforms
    • Discover insights and translate them into action for stakeholders across editorial, product and technology, creative, impact and senior leadership teams through written reports, charts and visually-compelling presentations
    • Partner with the editorial director of audience to champion our audience needs model, analyzing content through the lens of the needs quarterly and updating the model annually
    • Design and execute an annual qualitative research project with an audience survey and interviews to interrogate and update what we know about our key audience segments
    • Expand The 19th’s first-party data strategy to better understand our readers, improve data integrity and reduce reliance on third-party platform data over time
    • Collaborate with the product and technology team to strengthen data governance and infrastructure to ensure audience data is secure, accurate and usable; define business rules and tracking best practices for key metrics; assist with data configuration and QA in tools like Google Tag Manager; and maintain updated documentation
    • Partner with the product and technology department to design and build automated dashboards as needed to make it easier to track and share key metrics with various stakeholders
    • Coordinate with directors and managers who oversee partnerships, events, marketing and membership to align audience data approaches and analysis across programs
    • Build relationships across the organization to accelerate data learnings, make trusted strategic recommendations and field analysis requests, joining various weekly team meetings
    • Create a system for fielding, scoping and documenting ongoing analysis requests
    • Train staff on data tools and how to interpret data for their role, coordinating with external trainers as needed
    • Facilitate shared workflows for audience data work across the organization, serving as a consultant on best practices
    • Stay current on industry trends and integrate relevant practices on an ongoing basis

    Non-essential functions (as capacity permits)

    • Participate in culture building and inclusive decision making, as well as bringing ideas to different parts of our work to help us improve as an organization, such as hiring and onboarding new staff members
    • Contribute to cross-team learning, leadership development and organizational planning
    • Participate in team, organizational and individual relationship building and professional development throughout the year
    • Other responsibilities as needed

    Relevant skills and experience

    • 4+ years of experience tracking, analyzing and interpreting audience data in a newsroom
    • Experience using audience data tools, including Google Analytics 4, Parsely, Mailchimp and Meta Business Suite
    • Confidence conducting and displaying data analysis using pivot tables, advanced functions, charts and dashboards in tools like Google Sheets and Metabase
    • Enthusiasm for thinking and working creatively and collaboratively with journalists and product teams to solve problems
    • Excellent verbal, written and visual communication, with demonstrated experience using digital tools to communicate and collaborate effectively across a remote workplace
    • Google Tag Manager, BigQuery and SQL skills are a plus

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities.
