Survivor Justice Center is seeking a Senior Legal Assistant to provide administrative support for our legal team as well as programmatic and implementation coordination for SJC’s Shriver Civil Counsel Child Custody Project partnership with the Los Angeles Superior Court. The job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Scheduling intake interviews and appointments with prospective and existing clients;
- Screening applicants for service eligibility via phone calls and video meetings;
- Updating notes and case information in electronic client files in LegalServer;
- Communicating with clients to provide case updates, obtain required documents, and respond to inquiries;
- Scanning, copying and uploading documents to LegalServer to maintain case files and save required eligibility documentation;
- Organizing and maintaining detailed client case and eligibility files in LegalServer and SharePoint;
- Assembling, serving, and mailing documents and court filings;
- Assisting attorneys with correspondence, exhibit and witness lists, and simple court pleadings;
- Translating documents from Spanish to English (and vice versa);
- Monitoring filing deadlines and tracking case progress to support attorneys and paralegals;
- Coordinating scheduling of Shriver Project intakes for clients referred to partner agencies;
- Maintaining and compiling Shriver Project data (i.e. litigant information) to support reporting and grant requirements;
- Overseeing quarterly meetings with Shriver Project partners and the Los Angeles Superior Court including agenda and presentation preparation, scheduling, leading discussions, presenting data, taking notes, and following up on action items;
- Providing backup support for receptionist and other members of intake team;
- Serving as a role model and mentor for legal assistant(s);
- Adhering to all Survivor Justice Center policies and procedures;
- Participating in mandatory staff trainings and meetings; and,
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Associate's degree with 5+ years of experience providing administrative support in an office environment or, bachelor's degree with at least 3+ years of relevant experience
- Ability to read, write and speak fluently in Spanish
- Commitment to trauma-informed advocacy, cultural responsiveness, empathy, responsive listening, and demonstration of authentic care and concern
- Ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Candidates will have one or more of the following
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence or immigrant populations
- Experience with high volume customer service
- Experience working at a law firm or legal aid organization
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest work
- Familiarity with LegalServer or other case management platform
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work will be performed in an office and remotely, at a workstation, and requires the use of office equipment such as computers, copiers, telephones and postage machines
- This position requires concentration on tasks while facing distractions
- This position requires attendance at meetings, both remote and in person, in and outside the Center’s office, and requires applicants reside in Los Angeles County
- Position requires the ability to work from, and travel between, the Center’s main office at 5301 Whittier Blvd. in East Los Angeles and other locations
Compensación
This is a full-time (35-hours/week), non-exempt position with a salary range of $31-$33 per hour depending on experience. The Center offers a generous benefits package that includes: a 35-hour workweek, unlimited vacation, generous paid sick leave and holiday time, 100% employer-paid medical, dental, long-term disability, and life insurance for employees.
