Position Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity to join a nonprofit organization working at the intersection of organizing, advocacy, and wellness. As Filipino Advocates for Justice (FAJ) continues to grow, we are seeking a full-time Transition Age Youth (TAY) Organizer to build community power by recruiting, organizing, and developing leaders among Transition Age Youth (ages 18–35).
The TAY Organizer will conduct outreach and recruit participants by engaging Filipino community members, past FAJ program participants, colleges, universities, adult schools, and community partners throughout Alameda County. Working closely with the Civic Engagement Manager, the Organizer will implement leadership development and integrated civic engagement programming, including voter engagement, issue education, and local and statewide advocacy campaigns.
The TAY Organizer will also support FAJ's Transition Age Youth Civic Engagement (TAYCE) Cohort, equipping young adults with the skills and knowledge to understand issues impacting Filipino and AAPI communities, develop as leaders, and mobilize others toward collective action. This position reports to the Civic Engagement Manager and is based in FAJ's Union City and/or Oakland offices, with opportunities for hybrid remote work.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Outreach & Base-Building (30%)
- Recruit, engage, and build relationships with Transition Age Youth (ages 18–35), Filipino community members, other BIPOC communities, and allies throughout Alameda County.
- Conduct in-person and digital outreach through community events, tabling, colleges and universities, adult schools, phone banking, canvassing, social media, and other outreach strategies to recruit participants into FAJ programs and campaigns.
- Connect community members to FAJ programs, and campaigns, including Know Your Rights trainings, wellness programming, civic engagement opportunities, and leadership development.
- Cultivate and maintain a strong base of community members by supporting their transition from participant to active member, volunteer, and community leader.
- Maintain accurate participant and outreach data in Airtable and other organizational databases.
Leadership Development & Civic Engagement (40%)
- Assess the needs of Transition Age Youth to design and deliver accessible, culturally grounded curriculum that combines leadership development, political education, civic engagement, and wellness practices, ensuring programming remains responsive to the interests and priorities of participants.
- Recruit, coordinate, and provide ongoing support for participants in FAJ's Transition Age Youth Civic Engagement (TAYCE) Cohort.
- Facilitate leadership development, political education, and organizing workshops that deepen participants' understanding of issues impacting Filipino and AAPI communities.
- Support the implementation of integrated civic engagement programming, including voter engagement, public education, advocacy, local and statewide campaigns and support TAY political education of local and state government.
- Develop outreach strategies to engage young adults through community colleges, universities, workplaces, alumni networks, and community organizations.
- Coordinate educational workshops, trainings, and campaign activities that build participants' leadership, organizing, and advocacy skills.
- Collect participant feedback through surveys, focus groups, story collection, and evaluations to strengthen programming and measure impact.
- Travel as needed to conferences, trainings, coalition meetings, and community events as a representative of FAJ.
Wellness & Community Engagement (20%)
- Coordinate and facilitate community-building activities that promote wellness, healing, belonging, and leadership among Transition Age Youth.
- Collaborate with FAJ's organizing and wellness teams to integrate healing-centered practices into leadership development and community organizing.
- Participate in Deep Wellness meetings and contribute insights on the needs and experiences of Transition Age Youth.
Organization-Wide Responsibilities (10%)
- Participate in organization-wide campaigns, grassroots fundraising events, staff retreats, and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Collaborate with staff across programs to advance FAJ's mission and organizational priorities.
- Assist with program reporting, data collection, and other administrative responsibilities as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Skills:
- 3+ years of relevant work experience in community-based services and education with underserved populations
- Experience in outreach and relationship building
- Basic understanding of and empathy for conditions of immigrant community in the Bay Area; familiarity with and empathy to challenges faced by immigrant/migrant communities
- 3+ years of experience with TAY development and knowledge of issues.
- Strong supervisory, leadership, administrative, and evaluation skills.
- Strong abilities and experience with crisis management.
- Commitment to the empowerment of historically underrepresented constituents, including young people, people of color, poor people, immigrants and refugees, women and LGBTQ+ communities
- Experience in working under pressure with little support-supervision
- Willing and able to travel to and reach out Alameda County-wide
- Occasional nights and weekends required
- Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multicultural environment
- Self- starter with excellent problem-solving and reporting skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively
Preferred Qualifications:
- Intergenerational experience/skills
- Ability to speak and write Tagalog and English fluently
- Some social media experience/skills, willingness to learn, do more
- Solid organizational skills with the ability to work productively and accurately while under pressure in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a key team member
- Energetic and inspired by individual and community empowerment
- Comfortable in a fast paced (sometimes intense) work environment; detail-oriented and organized; able to ask for help
- Appreciation for and experience working in collaboration with diverse community stakeholders
- Openness towards traditional healing frameworks and a mind/body/spirit orientation
- Social justice orientation that recognizes the oppression of marginalized groups and the importance of movement-building aimed at promoting systemic change.
- Driver’s License, access to a car, and insurance coverage
Key Working Relationships:
- Position Reports to: Organizing Director and Civic Engagement Manager
- Position directly supervises: 4-6 TAY Interns
- Other Internal and/or external contacts:
- Internal: TAY/CE Organizing Team, Operations Director, Office Manager, Coordinators, program participants and youth interns, Healing Advisory Committee
- External: Vendors, school staff (various schools in Alameda County), partners such as Alameda County Behavioral Health, Union City Youth & Family Services, etc.
Location: Currently hybrid working, virtually and/or in-person as necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Oakland or Union City offices are available to use but are not operating openly under regular business hours until further notice. FAJ continually assesses COVID risk, market convention related to work locale policies.
Compensation: The salary range for this position is $67,000-$72,000 annually. FAJ provides a generous benefits package, including fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for full-time employees as well as partial coverage for their dependents, FSA program, a 401K Savings Plan with employer match, and other Staff Wellness and Development Stipends. We also offer substantial holiday and vacation days and time off.
