    Type: Independent Contractor (1099)

    Pay: $20/hour, generally up to 15 hours per week

    Contract: November 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027

    Maximum Contract Amount: $12,000

    Position Summary

    NAMI Illinois is seeking an Affiliate Development Consultant to help establish and grow NAMI Capitol Area, an emerging NAMI affiliate serving Sangamon County.

    The consultant will serve as a local connector, helping build community partnerships, recruit volunteers and leaders, increase awareness of NAMI, and develop the foundation for sustainable local programs and services.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build relationships with mental health providers, hospitals, schools, nonprofits, faith communities, government agencies, businesses, and other community partners.
    • Represent NAMI at meetings, community events, resource fairs, and outreach activities.
    • Recruit and support steering committee members, volunteers, and potential NAMI Program Leaders.
    • Help identify opportunities for NAMI presentations, support groups, classes, and other programs.
    • Support development of local leadership, partnerships, and affiliate infrastructure.
    • Identify potential funding opportunities, donors, sponsors, and community supporters.
    • Track outreach, partnerships, volunteer recruitment, and progress.
    • Participate in regular meetings and provide updates to NAMI Illinois.

    Ideal Candidate

    We are looking for someone who:

    • Enjoys meeting people and building community relationships.
    • Has strong communication, outreach, and organizational skills.
    • Is comfortable recruiting and engaging volunteers.
    • Can work independently and manage consistent follow-up.
    • Is familiar with Sangamon County and its community organizations.
    • Has an interest in mental health and NAMI’s mission.

    Experience in nonprofit work, behavioral health, community outreach, public health, social services, community organizing, or volunteer engagement is preferred.

    This position includes in-person community engagement throughout Sangamon County. Approved mileage and eligible business expenses may be reimbursed according to NAMI Illinois policies.

    NAMI Illinois is the statewide organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We work alongside local affiliates and communities across Illinois to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health conditions through education, support, advocacy, outreach, and community partnership. 

    Through NAMI Capitol Area, NAMI Illinois is working with the Sangamon County community to establish sustainable local leadership, programs, partnerships, and mental health resources.
