    About the Role

    The Director of Development is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that prioritizes strong donor relationships, institutional partnerships, and long-term revenue growth. This role oversees a robust development program that includes individual and institutional giving, including major gifts, donor management and cultivation, government and foundation grants,corporate matches and sponsorships, and special events and campaigns.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Fundraising Strategy: (50%)

    • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of Safer Together’s annual and multi-year fundraising plans, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and values.
    • Establish and monitor revenue goals, metrics, and budgets across all streams of giving (individual, institutional, campaigns, events), adapting as needed to meet evolving priorities.
    • Provide regular fundraising updates, analysis, and strategic recommendations to the Executive Director and Board of Directors to guide decision-making and long-term sustainability.
    • Develop systems, tools, and practices that strengthen the team’s overall fundraising capacity and align development efforts across departments.

    Donor Relations and Major Gifts: (20%)

    • Design and oversee donor engagement strategies that cultivate, steward, and deepen relationships across Safer Together’s individual giving pipeline, with a focus on small, mid-level, and major donors.
    • Guide staff in implementing communications and engagement plans that increase supporter retention and inspire increased giving (e.g., one-time to monthly giving, annual to multi-year commitments).
    • Shape the vision and strategy for donor events and giving circles that reflect Safer Together’s values and build a strong, inclusive philanthropic community.

    Institutional Giving: (20%)

    • Set strategy for institutional fundraising, including pipeline development, funder alignment, and multi-year partnership building with foundations, corporations, and public sector entities.
    • Oversee proposal strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, storytelling goals, and impact metrics.
    • Supervise or partner with staff and contractors to ensure timely, high-quality grant submissions, reporting, and stewardship.
    • Expand and deepen Safer Together’s network of institutional funders, with a focus on long-term sustainability and values alignment.

    Fundraising Campaigns and Events: (10%)

    • Provide strategic direction for integrated fundraising campaigns in partnership with the Associate Director of Communications, leveraging digital, print, and community-based platforms.
    • Oversee key fundraising events from a strategy and messaging standpoint, ensuring alignment with donor engagement and revenue goals.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and events to inform future planning and resource allocation.

    Performance Metrics

    Fundraising Strategy (50%)

    • In partnership with the Executive Director, achieve or exceed annual contributed revenue targets (e.g., $400,000 in Year 1), including establishing multi-year giving commitments.
    • Maintain and regularly update a 12-month fundraising strategy and calendar, with quarterly updates and performance reports to the Board.
    • Ensure a 12-month rolling fundraising pipeline is active and up to date, with progress tracked monthly across revenue streams.
    • Lead quarterly cross-team development meetings to align strategy, review performance, and adapt tactics.

    Donor Relations and Major Gifts (20%)

    • Oversee execution of a donor engagement plan that increases individual giving revenue by at least 20% annually.
    • Guide and support staff or consultants in managing a portfolio of at least 30 individual donor relationships, including a minimum of 10 major donor prospects.
    • Ensure systems are in place to track at least 30 meaningful donor touchpoints per month across the team (calls, meetings, notes).
    • Secure or guide the close of at least 10 new major gifts ($5,000+) annually through coordinated strategy and leadership involvement.

    Institutional Giving (20%)

    • Ensure submission of at least 52 grant proposals or reports annually, with 100% on-time delivery.
    • Maintain an institutional fundraising pipeline and calendar aligned with program goals, narrative priorities, and organizational capacity.
    • Achieve a minimum 50% proposal success rate and grow the institutional portfolio by at least $1 million annually.
    • Support program and leadership staff in grant alignment, reporting, and relationship building with priority funders.

    Fundraising Campaigns and Events (10%)

    • Provide strategic oversight for at least two major fundraising campaigns annually (e.g., calendar year-end and spring giving ), with defined revenue, donor acquisition, and engagement goals.
    • Oversee the planning and strategy of 1–2 donor events/campaigns annually, achieving a minimum ROI of 3:1.
    • Lead campaign design and support donor communications to drive at least 20% growth in new donor acquisition year-over-year.
    • Ensure stewardship systems are in place for timely follow-up with 90%+ of campaign and event participants.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role setting and executing development strategy.
    • Proven track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts from both individual donors and institutional funders (e.g., foundations, corporations, government entities).
    • Exceptional relationship-building, written and verbal communication, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex work into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to design and lead donor engagement strategies, manage portfolios, and coach or oversee staff or contractors in donor cultivation and solicitation.
    • Experience with donor management systems and CRM platforms (e.g., Givebutter, Salesforce, Bloomerang, or similar), and proficiency in data-driven fundraising practices.
    • Strong technical proficiency (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc) and related productivity and collaboration tools.
    • Strong commitment to racial equity, social justice, and community-centered fundraising practices.
    • Knowledge of and connections to the San Francisco Bay Area philanthropic landscape is highly desirable.
    • A strong network of relevant funder relationships, including foundations, government funding agencies, and corporate partners, is a significant asset.
    • Leadership & Collaboration Skills: Successfully lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with communications, programs, leadership and board.

    Hours of Employment

    Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend hours.

    Work Environment

    • Hybrid work model (in-office presence expected 3 days per week: Monday to Wednesday, subject to change).
    • Local travel for donor meetings, cultivation activities, and community events.

    Compensation

    $120,000 - $135,000 depending on experience and expertise
