Connecticut Outdoor & Environmental Education Association (COEEA)

    Job Title: Program Coordinator

    Position Type: Part-time (15 hours/week)

Location: Remote (within Connecticut) with required statewide travel

Compensation: $1,950/month ($30/hour; up to 780 hours annually)

Duration: One year (continuation contingent upon future funding)

    About COEEA

The Connecticut Outdoor and Environmental Education Association (COEEA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as the official state affiliate of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). We are a vibrant hub for environmental and outdoor education in Connecticut, working to bridge gaps in access to nature and foster a resilient future through environmental literacy. COEEA is a small organization led by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, and we are seeking an organized, committed individual to help meet our growing goals as we work to expand our membership, services, and partnerships.

    Position Overview

We are seeking a Program Coordinator to help advance COEEA’s programs, partnerships, communications, and fundraising efforts. Working closely with our all-volunteer Board of Directors, this part-time role will provide dedicated coordination and support for the CT Green LEAF Schools program while also helping strengthen COEEA’s outreach, member engagement, and development activities.

This position is well suited to an organized, collaborative, and self-directed individual who enjoys bringing people and projects together, building relationships, communicating with diverse audiences, and helping turn ideas into action. The role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to environmental and outdoor education across Connecticut while working within a flexible, mostly remote schedule.

    JOB DUTIES

    COEEA Operations & Communications (10-15%)

    • Board Support: Attend the monthly Board of Directors meetings (currently held the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00–7:30 PM via Zoom)
    • Newsletter & Outreach: Coordinate regular communications through EmailOctopus and/or Zeffy and the COEEA/GLS listservs

CT Green LEAF Schools (GLS) Coordination (40-50%)

    • Program Outreach & Onboarding: Promote the GLS program, recruit participating schools, and guide schools through the self-paced GLS process, including coordination of environmental education training sessions provided by the CT Climate Education Hub.
    • Resources & Recognition: Develop and maintain school handbooks and training resources, highlight exemplary school projects, and coordinate the GLS recognition process, including certificates and banners.
    • Mentor & Partner Engagement: Recruit and connect GLS Sages with participating schools and Green Teams, and serve as COEEA’s point person for the GLS partnership with Sustainable CT.

    Funding & Development (40-50%)

    • Grant Research & Solicitation: Actively identify and apply for grants from corporate foundations, specialized environmental funds, and other entities
    • Sustainability Planning: Assist the Board in identifying new revenue streams to ensure the continuation of the Program Coordinator position beyond the initial funded year

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Qualifications

    • Experience in program coordination, preferably within the environmental or educational sectors
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Zoom, and virtual collaboration tools
    • Experience identifying and soliciting funding through grants or donations
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences
    • Highly organized and able to balance multiple projects concurrently
    • Professional, self-reliant, and dependable when working in remote teams
    • Ability to work independently and flexibly respond to changing priorities
    • Residency in Connecticut and the ability to travel statewide for school visits and events

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of the Connecticut K-12 education system and local environmental networks
    • Successful experience with grant writing or fundraising for small nonprofits
    • Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice and equitable education
    • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy
    • Familiarity with systems automation tools such as Zapier or CRM platforms

    COMPENSATION AND WORKPLACE

    • Status: Part-time, 12-month contract. Extension is contingent on the coordinator successfully assisting the board in securing further funding.
    • Workplace: This is a mostly remote position; however, the candidate must be based in Connecticut.
    • Schedule: Flexible hours, typically during or following the K-12 school day, though occasional weekend or evening availability is required for Board meetings or special events.
    • Travel: Required statewide travel (approximately 2-3 times per month) to visit Green LEAF School participants, attend COEEA events, and represent the organization at partner locations.
