Overview
Art House Astoria is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit music and art conservatory dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable arts education to students of all ages and abilities. We offer private lessons and group classes in music, visual art, and theater at our Astoria location, as well as programs in partnership with neighborhood organizations and public schools.
Position Summary
Art House Astoria is seeking a friendly, reliable, and organized part-time receptionist to support our weekday afternoon and evening programs.
The receptionist serves as the first point of contact for students, families, teachers, and visitors. The primary purpose of this role is to handle routine front-desk needs and day-to-day interruptions so that other staff members can remain focused on program and administrative responsibilities.
The ideal candidate is warm, attentive, and comfortable managing a steady flow of visitors, phone calls, messages, and simple support tasks in a busy arts-education environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Greet students, families, teachers, and visitors warmly and professionally.
- Answer incoming phone calls and direct questions to the appropriate staff member.
- Take clear and accurate messages.
- Help families with basic questions about schedules, locations, and building procedures.
- Monitor student arrivals and departures and help maintain an orderly and welcoming environment.
- Communicate absences, late arrivals, and other timely information to teachers and staff.
- Assist with light administrative tasks such as filing, printing, copying, organizing materials, and basic data entry.
- Keep the reception desk, lobby, hallways, restrooms, and shared spaces neat and presentable.
- Help with simple day-to-day needs as they arise.
- Follow end-of-day closing procedures.
Qualifications
- Friendly, professional, and service-oriented.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Dependable, organized, and attentive to detail.
- Comfortable answering phones and interacting with children and families.
- Able to manage frequent interruptions and move efficiently between small tasks.
- Good judgment about when to assist directly and when to refer a question to the Student Services Coordinator, Program Manager, or another staff member.
- Basic comfort with email, Google Workspace, and simple office software.
- Interest in arts education or community-based nonprofit work is a plus.
Schedule
Monday through Thursday, 3:00–7:00 PM
Approximately 16 hours per week
Position begins in Fall 2026.
Compensation
$17 per hour
