    Come join The Crucible as a member of our Bike Shop for the opportunity to use your deep knowledge of bicycle mechanics in service to a community-based industrial arts school that is an iconic Oakland institution!

    As a member of our Bike Shop faculty, you’ll be responsible for maintaining and contributing to the development of our Bike Shop programming and curriculum, helping to build a strong teaching program in bike

    maintenance, repair, and reuse, as well as serving the local community with bike service. In this role, you’ll provide hands-on support for our regular community shop nights, repairing/refurbishing bikes for the community, outreach events such as our planned mobile bike shop program, and teaching bike-oriented classes offered by The Crucible, and other similar responsibilities. This is a great position for someone who enjoys teaching and interaction as an educator tied to bike riding, repair, and transportation equity, and working with youth.

    Knowledge Skills & Abilities

    • Commitment to The Crucible’s vision and mission for and to the Oakland community.
    • Demonstrable full-service bicycle/technician mechanical experience required.
    • Full spectrum of service skills for common repairs, including but not limited to the following
    • maintenance skills:
    • Wheel truing and tensioning; wheel building not required but beneficial.
    • Full spectrum of skills to service a wide variety of bikes and components and installation tasks.
    • Experience as a Bike educator or experience with teaching or customer service;
    • Commitment and ability to work with populations that are both economically and
    • ethnically diverse.
    • Experience teaching either youth or adults in a comprehensive way with patience and understanding.
    • Experience teaching or developing educational curriculum.
    • Familiarity with basic computer software systems (email, Google Workspace); Salesforce experience is welcomed.
    • Be a team player, a willing partner with development, communications, and studio leadership.
    • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as this position may require approximately 2 to 4
    • evenings per week and one-to-three weekend days monthly.
    • Valid California Driver’s License with an insurable driving record
    • Ability to complete California DOJ LiveScan for youth-serving organizations.

    Physical Requirements

    This position is primarily located in an office and warehouse environment. Able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

    • Stand, sit, kneel, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions for the duration of shift.
    • Able to operate standard office equipment including computers, keyboard, phones, POS machines, and printers.
    • Able to use tools involved in all aspects of bike maintenance and repair.
    • Traverse safely throughout the entirety of the facility including climbing stairs.
    • Safely lift, move, and transport items weighing up to 35 lbs.
    • Complete COVID-19 primary vaccination series and most recent vaccination booster available.

    Compensación

    This is a temporary, part-time non-exempt position based in Oakland, CA. Our work environment is casual, upbeat, professional, and fun. This position is scheduled to work approximately 12-15 hours/week during The Crucible’s business hours, which change seasonally. A successful candidate would have the flexibility to work 2-4 evenings per week and 1-3 weekend days per month.

    The non-negotiable pay rate for this position is $25.00 per hour. Temporary non-exempt part-time employees accrue paid sick leave pursuant to California law.
