The Senior Director of Finance oversees the organization’s day-to-day finance operations, handles financial reporting, and ensures compliance with rules for government contractors and non-profits. The Senior Director of Finance reports to the Chief Financial Officer, as a key contributor to achieving alignment of financial activities with the organization’s mission priorities and its sustainability.
Responsibilities of the job include:
- Demonstrate and reflect the mission and values of the organization.
- Proactively coordinate and collaborate with colleagues to fulfill mission and objectives of the job.
- Oversee daily accounting functions: Manage accounting day to day operations, supervise senior accountants and transaction processing, review and approve analyses and journal entries for accuracy and completeness.
- Offer recommendations for improvements in internal controls, finance policies and procedures, and implement new processes
- Manage monthly close cycle; prepare/review/approve journal entries
- Supervise Senior Accountants performing payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, journal entries, and account reconciliations as part of the monthly financial cycle.
- Compile monthly financial reports to management with accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare & monitor budget vs. actual results for departments, projects and grants. Monthly / quarterly analysis and review actual revenue and cost accounting results.
- Provide necessary regular reporting to department heads, project leads and provide reporting to program leaders.
- Review all month-end schedules, account reconciliations, reports and cash receipts for accuracy and completeness
- Manage the Fiscal Year End process
- Prepare / review all necessary schedules and documentation, year-end financial statements and accompanying footnotes to complete the external audit and Uniform Guidance/A-133 audit; liaise with external auditors. Coordinate response to funder financial audits.
- Prepare / review all necessary schedules and documentation, year-end tax return/Form 990 and accompanying schedules/reports in coordination with external tax preparer.
- Prepare / review all necessary schedules and documentation, Retirement Plan Audits (Tax Deferred Annuity & Defined Contribution Retirement Plans) and accompanying schedules/reports in coordination with external auditors
- Maintain accounting software (MIP).
- Administer timesheet and payroll system through ADP
- Monitor government grants activity and reports, drawdowns and reimbursements.
- Prepare annual indirect rate submissions for agency approval.
- Ensure compliance with grants and contract conditions (FAR/ Uniform Guidance), and prepare required financial reporting for grants.
- Prepare and review regulatory filings.
- Work with leaders across the organization to monitor budget vs. actuals
- Complete necessary budgets pertaining to new/recurring proposals for funding requests.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in financial management and non-profit accounting, including supervisory responsibilities
- BS in Accounting
- MBA preferred
- CPA or audit experience preferred
- Non-profit finance experience preferred
- Excellent communication skills and ability to foster collaborative relationships with all levels of employees and external vendors
- Team management experience, including demonstrated ability to successfully coach team members
- Ability to exercise independent judgment
- Excellent computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software
This is a hybrid role. The Senior Director of Finance will work in the New York City office at least one day per week.
