    T’ruah is seeking a talented senior professional to serve as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO will work closely with the leadership team and the finance and technology team, which they supervise. The CFO reports to the executive office, which includes the CEO and Deputy CEO. The CFO will be responsible for strengthening, maintaining, and supervising T’ruah’s monthly and annual fiscal infrastructure including annual audits and budget reporting, while looking ahead to build strategy and strength into the future.

    The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail and excellent financial skills, with considerable experience in nonprofit finances. We are a small team looking for a team player, who can step up to problem solve collaboratively and independently as questions and challenges arise. T’ruah staff are successful when they have strong emotional intelligence, care for their colleagues, and an affinity for our mission.

    What You’ll Do

    The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the following:

    Financial Management and Strategy:

    • Oversee T’ruah’s daily financial operation, including being the primary staff responsible for cash, bank, accounts receivable, and account payable processes and coordination with the development department to ensure revenue is organized and compliant with all grant, funder, and contract requirements.
    • Develop, improve, and maintain financial management systems, processes, and policies.
    • Develop and communicate regular financial forecasts to the Executive Office, identify organizational financial trends and recommend adjustments to organizational work based on financial forecasts and cash flow.
    • Oversee the annual financial audit with the Financial Manager and ensure accurate and timely IRS 990 filings.
    • Supervise the monthly financial closing processes, ensuring accuracy, and improving this process to better serve the organization over time.
    • Report monthly financials to the leadership team, report to the Board at all meetings currently 3/year, and re-forecast semiannually if needed based on results revenue and expense actuals.
    • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with the Financial Manager and the Deputy CEO, the Chief Development Officer, with input from budget directors (staff members who have budget responsibilities), leading on forecasting, planning and analysis to ensure organizational goals are achieved in a fiscal and compliant manner.
    • Communicate with budget directors, including about budget changes, supporting implementation of processes, and working in partnership on budget planning.
    • Communicate clearly with the leadership team about fiscal needs, budget process, and revenue.
    • Oversee all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization, in collaboration with the Board of Directors and audit committee.
    • Develop or update financial policies, procedures and internal controls, as needed.
    • Manage and lead on decision making pertaining to earned income from assets and investments in partnership with the leadership team and the Board.
    • Improve grant budgeting processes in partnership with the development team.
    • Help lead on long-term fiscal planning in partnership with the leadership team and the treasurer and audit committee of the Board.

    Compliance & Risk Management

    • Lead risk management for the organization, reporting to the leadership team and Board so they are appropriately informed; leading on decisions about insurance with input from the CEO.
    • Oversee cybersecurity and IT systems to ensure staff has the necessary technology, training, and policies in place to protect our information and reputation.
    • Create, strengthen, and maintain strategies and processes to manage organizational compliance, including:
      • Ensuring that T’ruah is registered in all appropriate states and localities for fundraising and employment purposes;
      • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, taking into account the many different jurisdictions in which the organization operates.
    • Create and maintain strategies and processes to manage organizational risk, including:
      • Policies and procedures to ensure efficient negotiation, execution and monitoring of contracts and procurement, ensuring timeliness and effective risk management;
      • As needed, consulting with outside counsel on legal and risk related matters.
    • Maintain and supervise adherence to accounting best practices
    • Oversee IT and software and tech platforms ensuring technological security, and supporting implementation of software and security best practices in partnership with vendors and staff responsible for using platforms.

    Administration, PEO Management, and HR:

    • Serve as primary liaison to our PEO to ensure payroll and benefits are consistent and compliant, and vendors are meeting requirements. Lead on search for new vendors as needed.
    • Communicate transitions and share information with staff. Answer questions on payroll, benefits, and PTO, and coordinate to train staff as necessary. Onboard and offboard staff regarding payroll and benefits.
    • Work closely with the Deputy CEO on HR-related matters, including:
      • Implementing equity best practices across personnel policies and hiring practices
      • Ensuring personnel policies are up to date
      • Maintaining personnel records.
    • Be lead senior-level staff on office-related matters including vendors, physical office space, and physical security.
    • Lead the finance and technology team, including:
      • Set departmental goals, ensuring the timely completion of all departmental responsibilities;
      • Supervise the finance and technology staff, including the Financial Manager and the Data Manager.

    Executive/Internal Management:

    • Serve as a member of the leadership team responsible for collaboratively leading the organization, including as a thought partner and content expert on financial and security matters.
    • Serve as a partner and support to the leadership team, Executive Office, and the Board in crafting short term and long term financial strategies, including forecasting to strengthen and evolve the organization.
    • Ensure that CEO and Board leaders, including the Finance and Executive Committees, have consistent access to accurate, timely, and critical financial information.
    • Work on a monthly basis with the audit committee of the Board of Directors and Treasurer.

    • Content-matter expertise in organizational finances and security at non-profits: You have five or more years of experience leading a large department’s or small-to-mid-size organization’s finances, managing monthly closes, setting up systems to track budgets and make projections, and are comfortable planning and solving for fiscal challenges and opportunities. You have experience being the final reviewer of financial data, for either a division or significant program area. You stay up to date on how nonprofits can ensure physical, technological, and financial safety, and/or have access to resources that can provide up-to-date information.
    • Skilled communication: You can explain complex financial matters to colleagues and stakeholders without financial backgrounds. You help build understanding, share information with generosity, and when there is a hard decision to be made, consider how the information will land to craft the narrative with compassion. You maintain confidentiality and trust in communication.
    • Exceptional project management with great attention to detail: You have excellent planning, delegation, and problem-solving skills and a strong sense of ownership over tasks, including follow-through. You are persistent and do what it takes to get the job done. You are able to effectively prioritize when faced with competing deadlines, and be the last set of eyes on detailed work such as budgets.
    • Commitment to advancing T’ruah’s work: You are excited to work for T’ruah and contribute towards our mission. You are comfortable answering questions and motivating your team about our mission and its role in their work, further motivating staff at a mission-driven organization.

    What Else You Should Know

    Eligibility

    You must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

    Status

    This is a salaried, exempt, full-time position (i.e., 40 hours per week).

    Salary

    The salary range for this full-time position is $105,000 – $150,000 per year.

    We set salary through a collaborative process using a standard rubric based on years of experience.

    Benefits include:

    • T’ruah pays for 100% of the employee’s premium and 50% of one dependent’s premium on our recommended medical insurance plan
    • Employer-covered basic life and AD&D insurance valued at $10,000
    • Optional benefit plans available at employee expense: dental, vision, health savings account, health care flexible spending account, dependent care flexible spending account, supplemental life insurance, and supplemental AD&D insurance
    • Automatic employer contributions of an amount equal to 3% of your salary to your 403(b) retirement account beginning one year after the date of hire – whether or not you make elective deferral contributions
    • 15 vacation days a year in your first year of employment, increasing to 20 days a year at the start of your second year of employment
    • 34 holidays a year, which includes Jewish and most Federal holidays, Summer Fridays, and a floating holiday
    • Paid leave of up to 12 weeks for the birth or adoption of a child

    Location

    This is a remote position with preference given to those residing in the New York City area. Those living in the New York City metro area will have our New York City office at their disposal if and when they choose to work from the office.

    Travel

    We expect you to have the ability to travel to occasional in-person meetings in various U.S. locations.
