Role Overview
The Manager of Marketing and Communications will spearhead BBBSBA's marketing strategy and brand presence across nine Bay Area counties. This leader will drive volunteer recruitment, donor engagement, and brand awareness through innovative digital marketing campaigns, strategic communications, and compelling storytelling. Working closely with development and program teams, you'll shape how we share our impact and grow our community of supporters.
Hybrid 2+ days – Office in Oakland, CA
Occasional travel throughout 10 Bay Area counties.

Key Responsibilities
- In partnership with agency leadership, develop and execute annual marketing and communication plans to support the agency’s overall objectives with a focus on fund development and volunteer recruitment and conversion and retention goals.
- Manage brand and reputational risk to ensure the internal and external brand is optimally aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives.
- Provide project management to effectively engage the organization cross-functionally on marketing and communication initiatives.
- In partnership with agency leadership, strategically select digital tools and build strong processes, drive marketing efforts and track conversions and ROI.
Management & Collaboration
- Manage 1-2 direct reports, providing ongoing guidance, coaching and professional development.
- Identify, develop and manage relationships with external contractors and vendors to meet agency goals, prioritizing cost-effective, quality deliverables.
- Work closely with program, development, and executive teams to ensure cohesive and effective communication efforts, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and accountability for shared marketing goals.
- Build on current org-wide systems for content creation, ensuring the collection and dissemination of inspiring stories and fresh organizational news.
- Contribute to creation and management of the annual marketing budgeting, ensuring cost-effective spending and a strong return on investment.
Digital Marketing & Online Presence
- Use digital marketing tools and analytics to track and optimize online presence, engagement, and conversions including SEO, SEM, and social media strategies.
- Regularly oversee audits of the agency's online presence across channels to ensure public information is accurate, including current the website.
- Provide significant support toward a website redesign to be completed in a 3-year timeline, including engaging with consultants, contributing to project management and writing copy.
- Build brand awareness, growing social media followers through organic and paid strategies, increasing engagement and conversions, and driving visitors to channels (website, social media, etc.)
- Develop and implement new strategies for successful lead conversation specific to volunteers and donors.
- Use data and analytics to assess the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, making data-driven decisions to define and track key performance indicators (KPIs), and adapt plans to meet changing needs and trends
- Provide reports as-needed to the executive leadership team on progress and outcomes related to marketing strategies.
Brand & External Visibility
- Cultivate, maintain and track relationships with media contacts, manage press inquiries, draft press releases, and secure media coverage to enhance the organization’s public profile.
- Oversee the creation, supply and distribution of BBBSBA brand collateral (recruitment materials, BBBS branded items etc.)
- Support and coordinate delivery of crisis communication as requested and guided by agency leadership.
Volunteer Recruitment & Acquisition
- In partnership with program leadership, develop, execute and track strategies for volunteer acquisition, conversion, retention and re-engagement including social media, email campaigns and emerging technologies.
- Identify new opportunities for awareness of recruitment needs with a focus on digital and corporate partnerships.
Revenue Growth & Fundraising
- Support the cause marketing strategy and relationships including round-up campaigns with corporate partners.
- In partnership with the development team, create agency collateral materials to support fundraising efforts including key print pieces (brochures, annual reports) and promotional materials including agency videos, decks, event collateral and donor stewardship materials.
- Partner closely with the fundraising team on executing successful digital and direct mail campaigns and events, using data to refine content, design and cadence.

Required Qualifications
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation for regular travel throughout the nine Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma).
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience (digital marketing, communications strategy, PR, nonprofit communications or fundraising, etc.) or equivalent working experience.
- Proficiency with Salesforce or similar CRM experience, email marketing platforms
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance short-term results with long-term organizational goals.
- High level of project management skills and a demonstrated track record and ability to see a project through from vision to successful execution while balancing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior management experience
- Proven track record of successfully driving volunteer and/or revenue growth in the nonprofit sector
- Working understanding of SEO, HTML, basic design principles and Google Ads
- Experience generating accurate forecasts and managing budgets
- Track record successfully selecting and managing third-party vendor/contractor relationships and performance
- Proficiency in Microsoft suite Google suite and Adobe (photoshop, indesign) applications and Google Analytics. Ability to learn new technology platforms.
