    Community Action Works

    Community Organizer

    Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX

    Community Action Works is hiring Community Organizers to empower local community groups and citizens by providing training and resources as they take on environmental threats in their community.

    When people see an environmental or toxic waste problem and want to protect their community, taking on well-connected landfill operators or pipeline builders or fighting polluting data centers is no easy task. But nobody has to go it alone. Community Action Works has been an ally to help people make a difference in more than 1,000 diverse communities of people from all walks of life throughout the Northeast. We are now expanding to work with communities across the country and are hiring organizers to make that possible.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide training for local communities on gaining media attention, persuading decision makers, crafting a winning strategy, and other means of making a difference;
    • Recruit groups for our Emergency Relief Grant Program, which enables community groups from Durham, N.H., to Cape Cod, M.A. to quickly and nimbly tackle new challenges as they arise;
    • Immerse yourself in the community and work side-by-side with local residents, providing the spark and people power it takes to prevail against tough-to-beat interests;
    • Raise money to support our work. Identify and cultivate donors, assist with grant-writing, and participate in other grassroots fundraising tactics including door-to-door canvassing, letter writing, and events.
    • Run a campaign office for the summer, knocking on doors to raise money to support our campaigns, build our organization and membership, and help build critical and timely grassroots support to win key campaigns. Your responsibilities will include meeting your own fundraising goals and managing a team of paid staff. You may be assigned to a different office location for the summer and should be flexible to move.

    This position requires excellent judgment, discretion and the ability to oversee significant projects.

    Qualifications

    Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. We're looking for candidates who are driven, work well with all kinds of people, and aren’t afraid to get outside their comfort zones, both in person and virtually. Ideal candidates will have leadership experience, top-notch writing and public speaking skills, an eagerness to learn and to train others, and be ready for a challenge. We value organizing experience, including building campus or community groups. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a car that they are willing and able to drive for work.

    Locations: We are hiring organizers for Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Atlanta, GA and Austin, TX

    Compensation and Benefits

    The target annual compensation for this entry level position is $38,250-$39,500 in the first year. Community Action Works offers a competitive benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, time off, a commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
