    Position Summary:

    The Jewish special education teacher (She’arim Lead Teacher) is a part-time Sunday school position responsible for supporting one or more classrooms of students in Jewish educational activities. Students in Gateways’ Accessible Hebrew School range in age from 5 to 22 and have a variety of special educational needs. The classroom teachers are encouraged to be creative, dynamic, and innovative in leading lessons to meet this wide range of needs. The position reports to the Director of the Accessible Hebrew School. The She’arim Program at Gateways’ Accessible Hebrew School meets from 9:15am-1:45pm during the school year excluding Jewish holidays and public-school vacations.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Teach class(es) on Sundays

    • Implement existing curricula and lesson plans in consultation with colleagues
    • Provide mentoring and feedback to one-to-one teen volunteers (classroom aides)
    • Implement developmentally-appropriate, student-specific accommodations for each class taught
    • Meet regularly with Program Director and/or other education staff (e.g., other teachers) to review past classes and plan upcoming units and lessons
    • Other duties as requested by the Program Director

    Student progress-monitoring

    • Review students’ forms, reports and school IEPs
    • Meet with volunteer(s) (one-to-one aides) to review each child’s needs and goals at the beginning of the year and additional times as needed
    • Document weekly student progress and participation using data collection, photographs, anecdotes, permanent products, etc.
    • Write end-of-year progress report for each child

    Required meetings and attendance

    • Be on site at Gateways’ Accessible Hebrew School by 30 minutes prior to first scheduled session on class days
    • Participate in scheduled sessions (9:30am-11:00am) with meeting time in between as needed.
    • Clean up classroom at the end of the sessions
    • Participate in mandatory program staff meetings and volunteer trainings at beginning of year, and as scheduled throughout the year (calendar provided in advance of each school year)

    Qualifications:

    • BA/BS in special education or related field preferred
    • Experience working with students with disabilities
    • Knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs, and traditions
    • Ability to read Hebrew preferred
    • Enjoy working with children

    Salary:

    $150-$200 per weekly Sunday session based on qualifications and experience
