Family Legal Care seeks a full-time, talented, and experienced Staff Attorney to join our Pro Bono Team. The Staff Attorney will join an exciting program that pioneered providing remote legal assistance to New York family court litigants. Family Legal Care’s Pro Bono Program connects unrepresented litigants in Family Court throughout New York State with volunteer attorneys for virtual, limited scope legal advice consultations. This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in innovative access to justice work and using technology to help connect underserved communities with critical legal assistance.
The Pro Bono Staff Attorney supervises and mentors volunteer attorneys, prepares case referrals, and directly assists clients. The Pro Bono Staff Attorney will also supervise legal interns and volunteers. The Pro Bono Staff Attorney works under the supervision of and reports to the Director of Pro Bono Programs and works closely and collaboratively with the other members of the Pro Bono Team.
Family Legal Care is a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase access to justice in New York State Family Court. We combine legal guidance, easy-to-access technology, and compassionate support to help unrepresented parents and caregivers self-advocate on critical family law issues, while working on reform that improves the system for everyone. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise and mentor pro bono attorneys before, during and after consultations with clients
- Onboard and train pro bono attorneys new to Family Legal Care’s program
- Review petitions drafted by pro bono attorneys and provide constructive feedback
- Provide legal advice and guidance to clients in a virtual environment (via video chat, phone and email)
- Conduct client intakes and draft and finalize case referrals for pro bono attorneys
- Manage and update program data and client information in Salesforce
- Train and supervise legal interns and other volunteers
- Research, update and develop resources and materials for Family Legal Care’s Pro Bono Program
- Assist with cultivating and deepening relationships with pro bono attorneys and partner firms/companies through presentations, trainings, and other pro bono events and offerings
- Assist with data and/or reporting needs for the Pro Bono Program
- Participate in Family Legal Care’s monthly in-person staff meetings, trainings and organizational events
- Support other Family Legal Care Programs, as needed
Qualifications:
- J.D. and New York bar admission in good standing required
- Experience or demonstrated interest in family law, increasing access to justice, and providing services to underserved populations
- Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, build relationships and support individuals from different backgrounds and audiences
- Strong writing skills and close attention to detail
- Ability to take initiative and responsibility for multiple, varied tasks and thrive in a busy setting
- Demonstrated autonomy and ability to self-manage and motivate
- Experience and comfort using technology, including communicating effectively with clients and team members
- Professional, proactive, and enthusiastic team player
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams) and Zoom
- Ability to adapt to new technology
Location: This position is primarily remote, with in-person attendance required on an as-needed basis for meetings, events, trainings, or other organizational needs.
