Position Summary
The Camp Health Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for health-related concerns during Stanford Jazz Workshop's summer programs, including two weeks of Jazz Camp and Jazz Institute.
This position is responsible for responding to illnesses and injuries, maintaining health documentation, communicating with families, coordinating care when students are temporarily unable to participate in activities, and activating emergency medical services when appropriate.
The Camp Health Coordinator works closely with the Director of Student Life, camp administration, counselors, and faculty to ensure that health-related situations are managed promptly and professionally, allowing educational staff to remain focused on student supervision, instruction, and programming.
Stanford Jazz Workshop does not administer prescription medications and is not equipped to provide ongoing medical treatment. Rather, the Camp Health Coordinator serves as a calm and capable first responder, health resource, and coordinator of care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Review and maintain camper and staff health records prior to and during camp sessions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for camper and staff health concerns.
- Provide basic first aid and respond to routine illnesses, injuries, and other health-related situations.
- Assess health concerns and determine appropriate next steps, including rest, return to activities, parent notification, referral to outside medical care, or emergency response.
- Activate emergency medical services when appropriate and assist with emergency response procedures.
- Coordinate care and supervision plans for students who are temporarily unable to participate in camp activities due to illness or injury.
- Maintain health logs, incident reports, and other required documentation.
- Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, healthcare providers, and camp leadership regarding participant health concerns.
- Monitor communicable illness protocols and support healthy camp practices.
- Maintain inventory of first aid supplies and health-related equipment.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning and serve as a member of the camp's emergency response team.
- Collaborate with residential staff, counselors, faculty, and administrators to support student well-being.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 21 years of age preferred.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification prior to the start of camp.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during health-related incidents and emergencies.
- Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively with youth, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with children or adolescents in educational, recreational, residential, camp, or youth development settings.
- Experience responding to illnesses, injuries, or emergency situations in a professional or volunteer capacity.
- Certification or training as an EMT, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant, Lifeguard, Wilderness First Responder, nursing student, healthcare professional, or similar role.
- Experience communicating with families and maintaining incident documentation.
- Familiarity with camp operations, residential programs, or youth-serving organizations.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, highly organized, and comfortable working with adolescents and families. They are able to make sound decisions during unexpected situations and communicate clearly with students, parents, and staff.
Candidates may come from a variety of backgrounds, including youth development, camp leadership, education, residential life, emergency response, healthcare support, athletic training, recreation, or related fields.
Seasonal Employment Conditions
Training & Compliance
- Successful completion of required background screening and employment documentation prior to hire.
- Attendance at mandatory staff training and orientation.
- Completion of youth protection, mandated reporter, emergency procedures, and other required trainings prior to working with students.
- Maintenance of required certifications throughout employment.
Work Schedule
- Seasonal camp positions require flexibility, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Extended hours may be required during active camp sessions.
- Availability throughout assigned camp sessions is required.
Residential Expectations
- On-site housing may be provided.
- Residential staff are expected to remain available for health-related concerns during assigned duty periods.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
The Camp Health Coordinator must be able to:
- Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods.
- Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Respond effectively and appropriately during urgent or emergency situations.
- Travel between residence halls, classrooms, rehearsal spaces, dining facilities, and performance venues located across the Stanford campus.
