Bilingual (Spanish/English) Tenant Organizer
Tenants & Neighbors is a small, dynamic, grassroots organization that harnesses the power of tenants to preserve at-risk affordable housing and strengthen tenant rights in gentrifying neighborhoods throughout New York. We have two affiliate organizations: one that does grassroots tenant organizing at the building and community level to preserve at-risk affordable housing developments and one that does tenant-led legislative organizing and advocacy to address the underlying causes of loss of affordability.
About the Tenant Organizer Position: is seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English) base-building organizer for our work in New York City, primarily focused in subsidized and rent stabilized housing in Manhattan. Successful applicants will have experience engaging in the relational organizing model. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in building strong teams of members, campaign and leadership development.
The tenant organizer will:
- Conduct outreach, education, organizing support, building research, technical assistance and referrals with tenants in at-risk buildings;
- Door knocks weekly to identify tenant leaders who want to collectively control their housing and help them form/strengthen their tenant associations and create winning campaign strategies.
- Provide organizing support to help tenants identify critical areas of need and goals, and develop successful buildingwide campaign strategies as they organize to preserve affordability and to improve their living conditions.
- Assist tenants in building alliances with other tenant groups in their immediate neighborhoods and within owner portfolios to act collectively.
- Organize and facilitate know your rights workshops in target buildings.
- Help Tenants & Neighbors grow our membership, strengthen the leadership of our members and build our collective power through our membership meetings, ongoing political education and skills-based training
- Represent Tenants & Neighbors with other organizations and coalitions.
- Hold regular one-on-one meetings per week with existing and potential tenant leaders.
- Members and staff organizers co-facilitate Membership/ Leadership Committee Meetings.
- Help drive Tenants & Neighbors campaign work at the local, city, and state levels.
- Mobilize tenants and member leaders for actions across buildings, at the city and state level to fight for T&N’s platform.
- Recruit and develop campaign leaders to represent T&N in coalition spaces and participate actively.
- General Organizational Support
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
- Document work and keep up to date with database and reporting requirements.
- Support the broader goals and mission of the organization.
- Support organization-wide events such as the Annual Member Meeting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience of community, labor, or political organizing ( ideally tenant organizing)
- Experience moving people into action and conducting leadership development activities.
- Ability to work independently and, at times, in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to work/organize across racial and cultural lines.
- Experience working in a grassroots membership organization or other type of social justice organization.
- Demonstrate commitment to building long-term power with low-income people of color, their families, and their communities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Fluent in Spanish
COMPENSATION:
$52,500-$58,500 per year. Excellent benefits include vacation days, personal days, holidays, medical/ dental/vision healthcare coverage, travel reimbursement, and a 403(b) plan.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED WORK HOURS:
- This job operates in a professional office environment and out on the field. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
- This is a full-time, 35-hour weekly position, Monday through Friday, and as needed for evenings and weekends.
- Travel is primarily local, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
