Disaster Management Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania
What is it? The Disaster Management Programme places international students and volunteers in community resilience work across Tanzania — covering all four pillars of disaster management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and prevention. It addresses real challenges, including floods, landslides, cholera outbreaks, drought, and climate change. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.
Where? Communities, schools, and institutions around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, so you can plan your placement around your academic calendar.
Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.
Who joins? AIT typically hosts 15–40 international participants at a time, drawn from over 400 partner universities worldwide.
What does the Disaster Management Programme involve?
You work directly with communities, schools, and institutions to educate and empower Tanzanians across the four pillars of disaster management. Your days are structured, purposeful, and varied, and typically include:
- Practical fieldwork in schools and public spaces
- Community education sessions on disaster risk and resilience
- Programme planning and reporting
- Visibility and outreach efforts

Who does the programme partner with?
Art in Tanzania partners with corporations, government institutions, and the United Nations to turn awareness into action. Programme partners include Twiga Cement Industries, Coca-Cola, NBC Bank, PVC, AG-Energies Company Ltd., the Tanzanian Government, and — in the newest expansion — the United Nations Organisation.

This is a cross-disciplinary programme, and students from all professional backgrounds are welcome to apply. AIT currently hosts 15–40 international participants at a time, representing more than 400 partner universities worldwide. Start dates are flexible, and the programme runs continuously year-round.

Art in Tanzania (AIT) has placed over 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania since 1996. The Disaster Management Programme is one of its most impactful and in-demand placements.
