NGO Management Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania

What is it? The NGO Management Programme is a customised, hands-on placement at Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996. Volunteers and interns work within a functioning African NGO based near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, across project management, communications, fundraising, HR, and operations. The programme runs year-round, with flexible start and end dates.

Who runs it? Art in Tanzania (AIT), operating since 1996 across education, health, environment, and livelihoods.

Where? Madale Village, 30 km from Dar es Salaam city centre, Tanzania.

How long? Flexible — join at any point and stay for as long as your schedule allows.

What does the NGO Management Programme involve?

Your placement combines several areas of organisational responsibility into one integrated role, tailored to your background and interests:

    • Project management and fieldwork — plan and implement community programmes, run on-site monitoring visits, and evaluate the impact of development initiatives around Dar es Salaam.
    • Administration and reporting — draft operational reports, manage logistics for workshops and events, and prepare progress updates for stakeholders.
    • Communication and marketing — manage social media, produce video and blog content, and design flyers and brochures. AIT's Facebook pages reach over 50,000 followers.
    • Fundraising and development — contribute to grant proposals, support fundraising campaigns, and assist with donor outreach.
    • Human resources and volunteer coordination — support local staff, coordinate international volunteers and interns, and facilitate cross-cultural teamwork.
    • Research and needs assessment — study the social, economic, and environmental issues shaping AIT's work to inform programme design.
    • Training and capacity building — develop and deliver training for local staff and community members.
    • Impact assessment — evaluate projects and prepare evidence-based reports for donors and partners.

Depending on your background, your placement may also cover AIT's core focus areas (Children Under School Age, Human Rights, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Advocacy, and Climate Change Adaptation), the Tanzanian Football Youth Academy, applying AI as an operational tool in NGO workflows, and revenue-generation strategies for the NGO's financial sustainability.

    How does the placement work?

Every placement is fully customised to your academic background, professional experience, interests, and any requirements from your home institution. Each Monday, your supervisor prepares a written weekly work plan; at the end of each week, you submit a short report that feeds directly into the next week's planning.

Supervisors are present every working day, and some live on-site at the compound. AIT typically hosts 20 to 35 students from a wide range of disciplines and nationalities at any time.

    Where is the programme located?

The base is Madale Village — a green, quiet community 30 km from Dar es Salaam city centre.

Address: Umoja Road, Block 2Q, Madale Village, P.O. Box 23333, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Can I get funding for the placement?

Yes. This placement qualifies as a training placement under the Erasmus+ Programme, and funding may cover part or all of your costs. Contact your student or international office as early as possible — ideally before you travel — to explore grant options.

    What about visas and documentation?

AIT issues an official Charity Invitation Letter to support your volunteer or student E-VISA application and guides you through the online form. Contact AIT once your placement is confirmed so documentation can be prepared without delay.
