New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a Community Organizing Intern to support the Health Justice program.
The Health Justice (HJ) program brings a racial justice and immigrant rights focus to healthcare advocacy in New York City and State. In partnership with individuals and community-based organizations, we use a wide range of advocacy tools – including community organizing, coalition-building, individual representation, impact litigation, and legislative advocacy – to advance four broad goals: (1) combat the human rights crisis in immigration detention; (2) promote immigrant access to healthcare; (3) eliminate racial and ethnic discrimination and systemic and institutional barriers that limit New Yorkers access to healthcare; and (4) address the social determinants of health so that all New Yorkers can live a healthy life. Current campaigns focus on advancing the rights of people confined to immigration detention, including the right to access necessary care, and advocating for their release; providing immigration representation and health advocacy for undocumented and uninsured immigrants with serious health conditions; providing immigration representation and health advocacy for undocumented immigrants who identify as transgender, gender-nonconforming, or intersex; improving access to medical care for people with disabilities; and addressing social determinants of health, including outreach and education on health-related matters.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Health Justice, and in close collaboration with the Health Justice Community Organizer, the Health Justice Organizing Intern will support community-based campaigns and strategies related to immigrant health policy and advocacy, with a focus on addressing the healthcare crisis in immigration detention. The Community Organizing Intern will work both independently and in collaboration with attorneys, advocates, and other staff on the Health Justice team.
Core duties may include but are not limited to:
- Supporting the drafting and release of newsletters for the Medical Providers Network
- Virtual and in-person participation in coalition meetings, trainings, public hearings, rallies, and community events
- Supporting facilitation, logistics, and programming for public education trainings
- Assisting with other administrative and logistical tasks as needed to further NYLPI’s community-driven mission pursuing justice for New Yorkers
NYLPI currently operates in a hybrid work schedule and requires in-person attendance two days per week. Most student schedules can be accommodated under our attendance policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Ability to obtain external funding or course credits for this internship.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently and to juggle multiple tasks under time constraints.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 suites, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Highly interested in working in immigration health advocacy and organizing.
- Strong communications skills, including the ability to work and communicate with diverse audiences including colleagues, organizational partners, community members, clients, and public officials.
- Ability to learn new technology tools and platforms.
- The person in this role must be based in the New York City area upon starting the internship.
Preferred
- Prior experience in policy advocacy, community organizing, and/or electoral campaigns
- Prior knowledge in immigration and/or health justice.
- Familiarity and experience working on social justice issues, particularly related to migrant justice, racial justice, health justice, and ending mass incarceration.
- Availability for a minimum of 8 hours weekly from September 18 to December 23, 2026 with the opportunity to extend into the spring.
- Availability for a hybrid position, with the ability to be at the office in-person on either Mondays or Wednesdays as needed. Please indicate your preference for which in-person day you would be available in your cover letter.
