Role: Communications & Marketing Intern
Reports To: Director of Development
Location: Onsite, 296 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY (at 28th Street)
Commitment: 15-20 hours/week; 3–6 months
Compensation: $25/hour
The communications & marketing intern will help Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry (HASK) raise public awareness, inspire engagement among supporters and volunteers, and promote the organization's mission to feed hungry New Yorkers. The ideal candidate is creative, eager to learn, and loves to develop imaginative and compelling content for social media and other communications platforms. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry (HASK) is the largest soup kitchen in New York and has embodied hope and compassion in the Chelsea area of Manhattan since 1982. Every week, we serve approximately 50,000 nourishing meals through grab and go Soup Kitchen hot lunches, our Food Pantry, and off-site Hearty Start breakfast and lunch sandwich distributions. The mission of HASK is to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, seek justice for people experiencing homelessness, and provide hope and opportunity for guests seeking to navigate their way toward health, housing, and jobs. Responsibilities
- Digital Content Creation: Draft and schedule social media and digital content for platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
- Gather stories, stats, and photos from soup kitchen guests, staff, and volunteers to create content for various communication channels.
- Assist with social media management by responding to queries.
- Monitor HASK’s position on social media and identify new opportunities to increase the organization’s presence and engagement on social platforms.
- Collect and assess social media analytics to better understand and support HASK’s social media strategy and to help compile monthly performance reports.
- Partner with other HASK departments to bring their work to life on social media.
- Attend HASK events when needed to collect content for social media (such as photos, interviews/soundbites with partners and staff).
- Media Monitoring/News: Track traditional and social media for industry news.
- Copywriting: Draft content for newsletters, email campaigns, and reports.
- Graphic Design: Create visually engaging materials, such as fliers, infographics, and social media graphics using platforms like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Administrative Support: Assist with gathering info and stats for communications such as e-mail marketing, the website, direct mail, advocacy opportunities, and annual reports; managing media contact lists; organizing photo libraries; and supporting in-person outreach events.
- Website Updates: Help maintain and update the organization's website, as needed.
- Event Support: Help promote and coordinate organizational events, as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Communications Skills: Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills with an eye for grammar, tone, and proofreading.
- Digital Proficiency: Experience with social media management tools (e.g., Facebook Business Manager).
- Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, and experience with digital tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Mailchimp, and social media scheduling software (e.g., Facebook Business Manager) and (optional) basic CMS platforms.
- Education: Current undergraduate or graduate student, or bachelor's degree holder in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, English, or a related field.
- Mission Alignment: A passion for food justice, social justice, and the environment.
- Organization: Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Requirements
- A current student enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in communications, marketing, digital media or journalism or related field, or a recent grad.
- Deep knowledge of social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
- An understanding of social media as a way for organizations to engage and grow audiences and participate in conversations.
- Must be well-organized and have the ability to think creatively and strategically.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate.
- Strong writing and photography skills.
- Must possess a strong work ethic and be an enthusiastic team player.
- Must have a cell phone with a high-quality camera, and a laptop.
- (Optional) Experience creating short social media videos.
