Web Development & Social Media Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania
What is it? The Web Development & Social Media Programme places international students and volunteers on Art in Tanzania's live digital platforms — building and maintaining its websites, creating content, growing its social media, and improving SEO for a real audience of over 50,000. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.
Where? Around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, working on AIT's live web and social platforms.
How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, with duration adjustable to your academic schedule and goals.
Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

What does the programme involve?
You work on live platforms with real responsibilities in a fast-moving NGO environment. Work spans:
- Web development and maintenance — working directly on AIT's websites, volunteerafrica.fi and artintanzania.org, on development, maintenance, UX improvements, and content updates — suitable for front-end, CMS, or full-stack backgrounds.
- Content creation and copywriting — writing, editing, and publishing web content that communicates AIT's programmes, impact, and participant experiences to interns, university partners, donors, and the public.
- Social media management and growth — managing and growing AIT's social presence, including a Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers — creating and scheduling content, engaging audiences, and analysing performance.
- Digital advocacy — developing content that advocates for the communities AIT serves, translating fieldwork and human stories into content that informs and mobilises audiences.
- SEO and digital visibility — contributing to search engine optimisation so AIT's programmes are discoverable by students and volunteers, improving organic reach and reducing dependence on paid promotion.
- Analytics and reporting — tracking website traffic, social engagement, and content reach, providing the data AIT needs for informed digital strategy decisions.
How is NGO digital work different?
Working on digital platforms for an NGO in a developing-country context differs from agency or corporate work in ways that matter professionally: resources are limited, priorities shift quickly, and audiences span multiple languages, cultures, and levels of digital literacy — content must work for a student in Finland and a community partner in Dar es Salaam at once. How does the placement work?
Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured and aligned with your academic requirements.
