    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) is seeking an intern to support its International Business and Economic Development team in advancing agriculture-based livelihoods initiatives.

    This role is ideal for someone passionate about global economic development, agriculture, and empowering communities through sustainable business models.

    • Conduct desk research on best practices and innovations in agricultural small business development (particularly in LMICs) and synthesize findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
    • Support the integration of business development and livelihoods approaches into agriculture-focused projects to help field teams and technical advisors strengthen the economic impact of farming initiatives.
    • Collaborate with technical advisors and field teams to design and document replicable, sustainable farm models suitable for smallholder and community-based settings.
    • Assist with coffee business development efforts, including research on cultivation practices, post-harvest processing, and market opportunities.
    • Help develop practical tools, guides, and training materials that local teams can use to improve productivity, quality, and profitability of agricultural initiatives.
    • Contribute to market research and competitor analysis for agricultural products and enterprises.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

      Current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in agriculture, agronomy, agricultural economics, environmental science, or a closely related field.

        Strong understanding of agricultural systems, smallholder farming, or agribusiness models; familiarity with LMIC contexts is a plus.

          Experience or coursework in areas such as sustainable farming practices, crop production, agricultural value chains, or rural livelihoods.

          LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

          A valid driver’s license.

          KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

          • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize technical agricultural information into clear and actionable insights.
          • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to create user-friendly materials for both technical and non-technical audiences.
          • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
          • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively with global teams in a virtual environment.
          • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office365 (primarily Word and PowerPoint)
          • Ability to learn and retain the broad scope of all NHQ section operations and services in order to serve as an effective information resource and to aid in a timely and effective manner.
          • Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple deadline projects at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized.
