Event Management Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania

What is it? The Event Management Programme places international students and volunteers at the centre of Art in Tanzania's external presence — planning and delivering online university career fairs, in-person community advocacy events, and safari and tour operations. Work sits at the intersection of digital communications, community advocacy, and organisational development. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.

Where? Online with international university partners and in person around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, with duration adjustable to your academic schedule and goals.

Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

Who joins? AIT typically hosts 15–40 international students at a time, drawn from over 1,000 partner universities worldwide.

What does the Event Management Programme involve?

Your placement is tailored to your background and interests. Work spans:

    • Online info sessions and university outreach — facilitating online information sessions for students at AIT's 1,000+ partner universities; coordinating with overseas career offices; developing event content; and presenting AIT's programmes at virtual career days.
    • Content and presentation development — creating information materials and PowerPoint presentations for internal and external events, shaping how AIT communicates its mission, programmes, and impact.
    • AI-powered presentation and content production — helping the NGO team integrate AI tools into content and presentation workflows, building local capacity that lasts beyond your placement.
    • Community events and advocacy — organising in-person events with AIT's Tanzanian partners around themes including public health and human rights — practical, collaborative, and rooted in the communities.
    • Digital marketing and visibility — using AIT's digital presence as an event marketing and outreach tool. AIT's Facebook pages reach over 50,000 followers, giving your work immediate reach.
    • Safari and tour operations — contributing to AIT's safari and tour operations — a key revenue stream funding community programmes, where event coordination and logistics skills apply directly.

    What will I learn?

You leave with hands-on experience managing events in a resource-constrained, cross-cultural environment — developing adaptability, creativity, and professional maturity in ways conventional internships rarely can. You also gain a first-hand understanding of what it means to operate and build an organisation in one of Africa's fastest-growing economies.

    How does the placement work?

The programme runs year-round with flexible start dates and adjustable duration. Your placement is tailored to your background, experience, and interests. Event management, communications, marketing, public relations, tourism, and international development are all excellent fits.

Who runs the programme, and since when?

Art in Tanzania (AIT) has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania since 1996. The Event Management Programme is one of its most outward-facing placements, connecting AIT's work to international university partners, Tanzanian institutions, and local communities.

What is life in Tanzania like during the placement?

Beyond your placement, Tanzania delivers vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

    Can I get funding?

Yes. Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student or international office about grant options that could fully or partially fund the experience.
